PGPEX - IIM Calcutta's one year full-time residential
general management program for executives gives midcareer professionals the ideal platform to augment their
existing skill sets as they endeavor to armor themselves
for senior and top management roles in the industry.
The program, since its inception in 2007, has spawned
alumni who have demonstrated excellence in the
leadership positions that they have occupied in their
organisation. The PGPEX Class of 2015 comprises an
eclectic mix of youth and experience. The batch of 50
brings together nearly 8 years of average work
experience spanning 15 nations across 4 continents.
Under the able guidance of the country's leading
management faculty, a passion for continuous learning
synergizes with experiences from diverse backgrounds
to create an enriching learning environment.

Dear Recruiter,
Greetings from IIM Calcutta!
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to placement activities of our Institute. Through the pages of this
brochure you will get a broad overview of our program, activities and the placement process.
We started the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX) in 2007 and today the program is in its eighth year.
Faculty members and other stakeholders of the Institute envisaged the need of starting a specialized full time program,
designed to select and incubate people with exceptional intellectual and leadership potential to meet todays globally
challenging business environment where they can remain competitive by thinking strategically and tactically. We
have recently restructured the PGPEX curriculum and this will be effective from the Academic Session 2015-2016.
Individual research projects, introduction of pre work and workshop modes of teaching, live projects within a course
will be encouraged in the revised curriculum. This year, the PGPEX students with their rich and diverse domain
experience launched the first edition of the PGPEX online newsletter, PGPEX Business Review.
The school has taken the initiative to earn accreditation from top global agencies. The Institute has recently
received the AACSB accreditation, one of the most coveted by B-schools, which has been earned by less than
five percent of the worlds business programmes. It takes a great deal of self-evaluation and determination to earn
AACSB Accreditation and an international accreditation gives us recognition that we are doing fundamentally well.
In addition to AACSB, IIM Calcutta has also received accreditation from AMBA in March this year. Through accreditation,
IIM Calcutta has not only met specific standards of excellence, but has also made a commitment to ongoing improvement
to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver high quality education to its students.

Dear Recruiter,
PGPEX is the one year, full-time, residential, post-graduate program in management of IIM Calcutta. It has been
designed for executives with substantial work experience and leadership potential. The program, currently in its
eighth year, has created top management professionals who have enriched business in India and abroad through
their strategic contributions across industries.
The extremely competitive selection process followed in the program ensures that only the very best in terms of
aptitude, initiative and experience qualify. A look at the batch profile for the present class will show that they have
about 8 years of average work experience with significant international exposure. This is a diverse batch with work
experience in Information Technology, Consulting, Telecom, Manufacturing, Power, and Financial Services.
The PGPEX course is structured to harness and synergize management understanding and techniques through
courses offered by our in house and international visiting faculty. This is further augmented with consistent engagement
with industry leaders and CEOs who share with the participants their rich insights and practical underpinnings. On
completion of the course, the students are able to implement new ideas, play leadership roles and contribute
significantly to the growth and development of their organizations. The rigors of the PGPEX curriculum have met the
stringent accreditation norms set by AACSB. This year IIM Calcutta has also been placed among the top 15 global
business schools according to the ranking done by the Financial Times.
The experience and domain knowledge of the students, backed by the management skills imparted by IIM
Calcutta's globally reputed PGPEX program have shaped them to be successful future business leaders and
change agents ready to face the ever changing, competitive and increasingly globalized world.
It is, therefore, with great conviction and pride that I present to you the 8th batch of Post Graduate Program for

Welcome to the placement process of the Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPEX) at IIM Calcutta! PGPEX is a
one-year general management program for experienced executives. The current batch comprises of fifty highly
talented and motivated executives, who were working in India and abroad. The following points will help you get a
glimpse of the talent pool in this batch:
This group of high achievers undergoes a very rigorous curriculum (810 hours of teaching, considerably higher than
others). They also develop through a host of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. We, at IIM Calcutta, believe
that the grooming here prepares them to take up middle and senior level leadership positions across diverse industries.
The past placement record has supported our belief. The students of the past seven batches have been offered
leadership positions such as Director, Vice President and Senior General Manager in industries such as IT, Consulting,
FMCG, Analytics, Automotive and so forth.
The students of the current batch have come from various industries such as Consulting, Technology, PSUs, IT Services,
Financial Services, Power, Energy, Automotive and Manufacturing; and from functional areas such as Business

IIM Calcutta: - A Differential Learning Platform


IIM CALCUTTA
The first IIM to be established by the Government of India in November 1961 in collaboration with Alfred P Sloan
School of Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, The Ford Foundation and the Indian industry, IIM
Calcutta has evolved into a world-renowned institute with a distinctive culture.
Set in a 135 acre picturesque campus on the outskirts of Calcutta, IIM Calcutta has always attracted the best of students,
faculty and industry partners. Over the years, the institute has evolved into a melting pot of academia, industry &
research. The campus is fully residential with state-of-the-art classrooms, seminar and conference rooms and a 750seat auditorium. The B. C. Roy Memorial Library is one of the largest in Asia and is recognized by the World Bank as
a regional repository of knowledge.
The campus is almost entirely Wi-Fi enabled. Internet connectivity is available to students in their own living areas
and in the classrooms and IIM Calcutta's own computing infrastructure has a wide library of software suitable for
Computer Applications in Management. Students have access to proprietary databases, BSE/NSE trading platforms
and market data from around the world.

Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV)


IIM Calcutta has a vision to emerge as an international centre of management education with its foundation on Indian
ethos and values. Management Centre for Human Values is a significant milestone in achieving this vision and holds
up to humankind contemporary adaptations from the perennial and vibrant corpus of Indian philosophical wisdom.
The centre offers courses in Business Ethics, Value-based Leadership, NGO Management, Corporate Social Responsibility
and also conducts short duration Management Development Programmes and In-Company Programmes, and
Workshop on these themes besides publishing an international bi-annual journal viz the Journal of Human Values
through the Sage Publications.

Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Park (IIP)


IIM Calcutta's efforts towards promoting Entrepreneurship
Innovation (CEI)
and creating an eco-system to nurture start-ups has got
a fillip recently as it has incorporated on 22 August 2014
a not-for-profit company, called IIM Calcutta Innovation
Park (IIP) as a section 8 company under the Companies
Act 2013. The main objective of this newly formed
company is to promote start-ups in five broad areas healthcare, education, clean technology, lifestyle and
analytics. The newly formed company has planned to raise
seed fund to the tune of Rs. 10 - 20 crore from our alumni
to provide initial seed money to the start-ups incubated
at IIM Calcutta.

The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at


IIM Calcutta is an initiative to achieve greater
understanding and analysis of these areas and to stimulate
their development for societal benefit. CEI's vision is to
grow as a program of international renown, where
students, faculty, alumni, industry and policy makers
collaborate, learn and innovate. CEI is involved in
entrepreneurial research and case development in
collaboration with industry, support to creation of new
ventures and experience sharing with established
entrepreneurs to enable budding entrepreneurs to make
a smooth transition from idea to implementation.

Financial Research and Trading Lab


The Financial Research and Trading Lab (the Finance Lab) at IIM Calcutta was set up in November 2008 to undertake
cutting edge research on financial markets using real time high frequency data from financial markets of India and
around the world. The Finance Lab uses a simulator to simulate trading in financial markets using actual prices.In
2011, there was a grant from the Union Finance Ministry of Rs. 20 crore. The Lab has since augmented its physical
infrastructure and procured international databases & softwares. The Lab has over a dozen Bloomberg terminals and
over 78 terminals. The terminals are loaded with a trading simulator and contain data from six markets NSE- Cash and
F&O BSE-Cash, NCDEX, MCX and Currency futures.

International Immersion Program @ UK


Management programs today are
geared towards creating leaders of
tomorrow, leaders who hope to steer
their organizations towards success.
The PGPEX program this year aimed to
do the same but with a tinge of
experience thrown in! Deciding that
mere lectures on leadership in
comfortable setting of the college are
not good enough and that leaders
should know how to live and breathe
change, IIMC this year transported 23
of its 50 PGPEX students to the Ashridge
Business Schoolin UK to delve more
into the often researched world of
Leadership & Leadership theories. With
a curriculum that ranged from Global
Leadership to Leading Responsibly
during Turbulent Times to Handling
Change, the module covered various
aspects of contextual leadership. The
message was delivered using classroom sessions, experiential learning,
peer interactions and case studies amid
the lush beautiful 180 acre country
estate in Hertfordshire. The students over the two week period looked at leadership through a variety of lenses while
learning about tools that help leaders turn strategy into action. Be it visit to the Mini Cooper Production Plant and
London Stock Exchange or networking event with Rebecca Stephens, the first British woman to climb the Mt. Everest
or Crime Scene Simulation Activity or Outdoor activities, IIMC students got the opportunity to learn, un-learn and relearn about personal effectiveness, change, awareness and global leadership in a variety of ways. The International
Immersion in all proved to be a great learning experience, one which will not only be cherished by us because of the
memories we created but also because of the valuable lessons that we learned about Leaders and Leadership!

International Immersion Program @ Germany


The International Immersion Program at Mannheim Business School, Germany was a 2 week program based on the
theme "Doing Business in Germany". It was designed to provide a high-level view of the economic, cultural and geopolitical drivers behind countries integral to the Eurozone economy. Students attended classroom sessions from
highly qualified faculty and got insights about European Economic & Monetary Integration, Marketing Strategy and
Management in European Markets and International Management with German perspective. PGPEX students met
local business leaders and Mannheim alumni through guest lectures from companies like MVV Energie and achieved
a working knowledge of local business practices. Visiting companies like Daimler, Hager, German Central Bank,
BASF and SAP accentuated the understanding of German
work culture and familiarized with innovative solutions
employed by the German firms to overcome complex
challenges. The networking events with Mannheim students
provided the opportunity to learn from a tremendous group
of professionals and build strong relationships while immersing
PGPEX students in another culture. The Immersion Program
was a great learning experience and shall go a long way in
helping participants to succeed in global environments.

PGPEX has allowed me to take on various roles in a business over the last 3 years. In the
first opportunity post PGPEX, I was managing the CEOs office in SunEdison, a solar
company in South East Asia. I got a full view of running a business while working closely
with the VP, the CFO, project finance directors and other business segment leaders.
During this time, I was able to develop several of the skills I picked up during the one
year at IIMC. This includes skills related to finance, organizational design in the context
of multiple geographies, cross-cultural issues, organizational performance measurement,
business strategy development, connecting strategy to people and execution, negotiation
& persuasion, emotional intelligence, etc. I then moved on to become head of solar
products at SunEdison and launched the companys first solar product in India. In
hindsight, I can say that PGPEX experience allowed me to provide cross-functional
leadership, manage cash and drive the performance of the new vertical.
Over the last 1 year, I have been an entrepreneur running a family business. I was able
to understand the value of my family business only recently. Without PGPEX and
subsequent experience in running at SunEdison, I would not have appreciated the high
gross margins and pricing power in my family business and the core aspects that has
kept it running over the 15 years.
In summary, the impact of PGPEX builds over time and can have a multiplier effect in
the long run as different opportunities open up.

PGPEX turned out to be a perfect bridge between my engineering and product


management careers. My biggest takeaways from the program are the critical business
analysis and problem solving skills which have been immensely helpful in my day to
day work as a PM. The distinguishing feature of PGPEX is a healthy dose of courses
covering analytics & quantitative methods to solve business problems - vital tools in
this age of data driven decision making. Beyond academics, I got a chance to build
lifelong friendships with wonderful people. IIM Calcutta's breathtaking campus is icing
on the cake!

In 2011, I was Head Operations (VAS) - TTK Healthcare
Services Private Limited. Harbouring an ambition
to manage a business in the long run, it made sense,
then, to leverage on an internationally reputed
business management course which would provide
an opportunity to interact with a diverse student
body with substantial years of experience. The IIMC
PGPEX changed my perspective of looking at a
business and its environment. It introduced me to
new and innovative management tools and
techniques and their situational relevance. Moreover,
in this ever changing world, it instilled a critical habit
of consistently learning new things. Being able to
call on globally reputed professors or working the
strong, IIM-C alumni network are assets of
considerable value. Currently, I am a Director with
and the Country Head for an UK-India venture called
EiP which delivers Investors in People (IiP), a world
class people management standard, in India.

The time spent at IIM Calcutta during the PGPEX


program has prepared me be a global leader in an
ever-changing and challenging business world.
Through case studies, simulations, projects
and group assignments, I exceled in exercising
management skills, analyzing business issues and
making difficult business decisions. The academic
and personal experiences on campus have left me
with practical and invaluable life lessons in
leadership.
This program is a journey full of extreme rigor and
one that forms a solid foundation for a set of guiding
principles essential to responsible leadership. The
IIM education has given me access to an
unprecedented network of highly successful global
leaders and entrepreneurs that I value a lot. I owe it
to my wonderful professors, institutional authorities
and peers who made this life experience a
memorable one.

To me, before stepping into PGPEX, the world of finance and accounting was completely
alien. I had no clue as to what was balanced in a balance sheet. The continuous
bombardment in the form of tests and assignments and the unrelenting professors left
me with no choice but to dig deeper into the concepts of finance. The interaction with
students from the other program and the attention received from the professors has
definitely made me a better individual in all respects.

Being A CEO
The 'Being a CEO' series, organised exclusively for PGPEX students, offers a unique platform for the students to get a
peek into the minds of industry titans. The objective of this series is to facilitate interaction of the students with
executives from the C-suite of organisations across
industries. Each session provides a glimpse into the various
facets that occupy a top executive's thoughts. The speakers'
bring to bear years of leadership experience and enthralling
war stories on matters as diverse as government
regulations, people management, career changes and
learning from failure. The students are exposed to the
intricacies of decision making at the highest levels of
organisations. A recent session by the Chairman and
Managing Director of NTPC provided a fascinating insight
into the mechanisms of a public sector undertaking, and

During the past few years, the PGPEX students have had
the privilege of hosting speakers from Banking, Finance,
Defence, Retail, Power, Automotive, and IT industries.
A major advantage of these sessions is that it helps students develop a bridge between the theoretical concepts learnt
in the classroom and the realities of leading organisations. A common theme across all speakers is the emphasis on

Life at IIM Calcutta


Students at IIM Calcutta run a wide range of clubs and special interest
groups (SIGs) in campus. These clubs and SIGs offer students to follow

fields. Despite the rigours of an intense One Year Program, clubs and
SIGs have now become an integral part of PGPEX student life. The students
of PGPEX - VIII have contributed using their work and life experiences to

the cultural committee, the student council as well as in the IIM-Calcutta's

community action club, the INCA. PGPEX participants from the
Colloquia club have organised and managed various talks, seminars
and workshops by eminent personalities. PGPEX Students are also
part of the organising committees of Intaglio, IIM Calcutta's annual
international Business School summit, and Carpe Diem, IIM Calcutta's
annual cultural fest. The PGPEX students are also active in sports and
follow physically active and fit lifestyles. Students are part of IIM Calcutta's
Cricket league teams, representing the campus at various inter-college
competitions. The family members of PGPEX students also have a role to
play in the campus activities.
The kids and other family members of PGPEX students presented a dance performance at the Independence Day
function which received huge appreciation and applause by all the guests and faculty. The club activities compliment
the pedagogy in instilling a strong sense of teamwork through various group interactions at different forums. These
Club / SIG interactions include students from all programs of IIM Calcutta and gives PGPEX students a fresh perspective
that adds to the experiences from their professional life.

Lattice is a platform that facilitates interaction between transformational leaders of Indian society
and IIM Calcutta students. The business symposium aims to propagate the implementation of

Lattice 2013, with the theme, "India - The Time


Ahead" was conducted over two days in October
2013 with many different speaker sessions and
panel discussions. We had the privilege to hear
from media luminaries like Mr. Shekhar Gupta,
Mr. Prashant Pandey about the state of media
industry in India, personal experiences of
entrepreneurs like Mr. E SarathBabu (Foodking),
Mr. Ashish Chaturvedi (uFony) and speakers from
various sections of the society discussing on the

aimed to usher in a wave of new ideas among

a diverse mix of ideas from contributions fromthe

Lattice 2011 had the central theme of "Innovations


for India". A country as diverse as India is a
meltingpot of cultures, languages, tastes and social
andeconomic stature. This variety brings

and the puzzling all exist in one frame, and that

2011 was an effort, as future business leaders, to

CAMPUS VISIT POLICY


Companies may visit the Institute before the scheduled placement days to conduct industry talks and discussions.
Following guidelines shall be applicable in this context :
Any on-campus activity which is not a part of regular academic curriculum is defined as company-participant interaction.
Companies can conduct a maximum of two interactions for PGPEX (slot for interaction will be assigned on a first come
first serve basis)
All campus activities must be scheduled in conjunction with the PGPEX placement committee.
The fixed joining fee per student is charged for the services offered to the company throughout the course of recruitment
from the campus.
All placement charges should be settled within one month of students joining the organization. The institute however
does not guarantee that the student will join the company or will remain in the job for a specified duration of time.
Service taxes, if applicable, will be charged in addition to the fees.

COMMUNICATION
Recruiters are required to communicate the offer details to the PGPEX Placement Committee in order to enable the
Committee to streamline the placement process for both recruiter and participant.

make contributions over time. The placement committee understands your need to finalize business planning and
encourage students to make their decisions as quickly as possible. We encourage you to stay in close contact with the
PGPEX Placement Committee throughout the recruiting season and offer process so that we can ensure students are
adhering to our guidelines and assisting you with any helpful information.
Employers are expected to honour any offers they extend. If an offer must be rescinded, employers should contact the
account manager immediately to work out a positive communication strategy.

GRADE NON - DISCLOSURE


PGPEX students have substantial work experience and have been admitted through a rigorous evaluation of each
applicant's educational background, intellectual capabilities, professional experience and global outlook. Successful
completion of this programme at IIM Calcutta signifies each participant's academic success, management potential
and cultural awareness. The school treats its students' grades as confidential information and therefore has adopted
a policy of grade non-disclosure.
The Placement Committee reserves the right to amend the rules/guideline stated above and will inform the companies
of any changes accordingly.
