It is individually paced technique of
teaching learning
It uses a few lectures to stimulate and
motivate students
It used printed study guide to communicate
information
It uses tutors to evaluate attainment of the
objectives by the student

STEPS IN PSI
1. Instructor designs course policy
statement
2. Instructor breaks content into
topical chunks or units
3. Instructor develops study guides for
each unit
4. Study guides includes: objectives,
study procedures, questions
5. Self-paced, individual work through
guides

As students complete a unit, they are

tested
Immediate feedback is provided by
proctor with an opportunity to review
and re-test
Student move on to new units after
they master previous, prerequisite
units, self- pacing through course
Lecture limited, provide for
interaction and motivation more than

PSI OUTCOMES
Some evidence shows that tutored
students learn more than lectured
students
Students favor individual pacing and
appreciate individual attention from
proctors
Individualized attention for gifted/
special education most common,
traditionally viewed as too expensive
for average classes

ADANTAGES OF PSI

technique
Each student proceeds at his own
speed. The study guides self pacing
Text books are reorganized into
sequentially arranged study units
Negative reinforcement- punishment
is avoided
Not so expensive

Environment of cooperation
Students learn how to learn
No punishment is given to students
and ensure effective self- learning
Each student has a tutor who
provides instruction, counseling and
encouragement

LIMITATIONS OF PSI
Teachers may not have the
necessary enthusiasm to try new
ideas
Teachers may find it difficult to
prepare study guides and to write
behavioral objectives
Adequate notes or tests are not
readily available
There may be large number of
students in a class
