The proposed process involves application of a mixed fed-batch/ semi-continuous
process where high cell count is achieved, continuous plant operation and an
increased ethanol productivity.
The first modification involves changing from a batch cultivation process to a fedbatch process in YCV operation. The procedure below compares the old and the new
process.
Old process (Batch)
1. cultivation vessel
sterilization (YCV)
2. medium preparation in YCV
(80% full)
3. medium sterilization
4. culture addition to YCV

5. mixing for 12 hours with

aeration
6. end of cultivation/ transfer
to next cultivation vessel

New Process (Fed-Batch)

1. cultivation vessel
sterilization (YCV)
2. medium preparation and
sterilization in a separate
vessel
3. culture addition to YCV
4. intermittent, controlled
medium addition/ feeding to
YCV
5. mixing for 12 hours with
aeration
6. end of cultivation/ transfer
to next cultivation vessel
