MCS 1 to 1 Program Implementation Plan

Introduction
The goal of this implementation plan is to prepare our 3rd-5th grade students, teachers and
staff to join in our middle school in the 1:1 iPad program. As we have seen, the results of
our integrated iPad program in middle school has resulted in great things for our students
and greatly prepared them for our 1:1 iPad program launch this Fall. This did not come
over night, but through 3+ years of planning, research and preparation. We can know
take this knowledge to include our 3rd-5th grade students into the 1:1 iPad program over
the next 3 years.
Action plan
The timeline to complete the next phase of our 1:1 iPad program to integrate 3rd5th grade students will begin in the Fall of 2015 and conclude in the spring 2018.
Beginning in the fall of the 2015-16 school year, will we double the iPad cart totals and
availability for Elementary students. Previously we had roughly 50 shared iPads
available for grades K-5th. This fall, our three 5th grade classes will share 1 cart of 27
iPads, our three 4th grade classes will share 1 cart of 27 iPads, our three 3rd grade classes
will share 1 cart of 27 iPads, and our grades K-2nd will share 1 cart of 27 iPads. On
average, this will allow 3rd-5th grade students the ability to use an iPad for educational use
daily in the classroom with the goal of more technology integrated, 21st century ready
lessons being completed.
The cart availability is an improvement for our students, but for our teachers we
have something greater planned. Our new Digital Learning Coach, Andrew Rahm, will
be leading weekly Lunch and Learn PD sessions that focus on 1 specific classroom

technology integration in a short (15-20min MAX!) session that will leave teachers ready
to use this new integration in their classroom right away. Besides these weekly Lunch
and Learns our elementary focus for Professional Development will be classroom
technology integration. As we have seen with our middle school faculty, they spent the
last 2 years discussing technology use in the classroom and looking at various lesson plan
ideas, apps and programs with the goal being proficiently ready to integrate technology in
their classrooms. This same approach will be taken with the elementary faculty, as our
PD this year will all be focused on technology and this includes monthly PD lessons, our
thanksgiving, end of semester and Friday PDs.
Beginning in the Fall of 2016, 5th grade students will join middle school in being
apart of the 1:1 iPad program. They will follow suit with middle school and be
specifically trained and taught iPad use and digital citizenship lessons and once
completed be able to take their iPads home to use and further integrate technology into
their education. The following Fall, in 2017, 3rd and 4th grade students will join 5th-8th in
the 1:1 iPad program. So by the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, students in 3rd
to 8th grade will be apart of our 1:1 iPad program. Please refer to the timeline presented
at the end of this implementation plan.
Goals
There are 3 specific goals for this plan: technology integration in the classroom,
equipping teachers to be successful with this integration, and an more advanced and
prepared 21st century student who is technologically prepared to enter high school and
college. The world is advancing at a quicker and higher pace then ever before, so this
speed should not slow down when they entire our classrooms. Through technology

integration, students will be able present their understanding and mastery of the subjects
and information we are teaching them. The key opportunity here is the creative freedom
technology integration in the classroom gives our students. Allowing different methods
of displaying mastery of knowledge will better equip our students to be critical thinkers
and also give them more ownership in their learning. This technology integration in the
classroom will not be successful without proper and adequate training and preparation for
our faculty and staff. Our teachers are the strength of MCS and giving them the means
and opportunity to be the technology leaders in their classrooms will allow our students
to be successful. That is why PD and training is such a focus of the action plan and is
spread out constantly through the timeline below. Over half of our graduating 8th graders
in 2015 will enter into a high school in the fall that has some type of technology initiative
or 1 to 1 program. We would be doing a disservice to our students by not preparing them
beginning in the 4th grade to enter high school well equipment to be successful in a
technology program. We prepare our students to understand Algebra, grammar
composition and the Civil War to enter high school, why not technology too?
Measuring achievement
There will be 2 main decisive ways we will be able to measure the success of our
1 to 1 iPad program: Level of lesson involvement in technology through the SAMR
model and digital metrics including Schoology reports and percentage of technology
driven assignments. Our middle school has been involved in SAMR workshops and
lesson integration that will be also used for upper elementary to help gauge teacher lesson
plans and the level of technology integration. Various Schoology reports including level
of teacher, student, and parent involvement as well as assignment completion reports

will help understand how well our technology integration is being received with our
students and families.
Conclusion
Three years ago when it was first decided that iPads would be teachers hands
and begin to be used in the classrooms with our students, we knew technology would be
increasingly relevant and vital for the success of our students and school. Through the
actions presented in the implementation plan and the aforementioned timeline, The MCS
1 to 1 program is the next step in the growth of MCS and continued success as the leader
of an academically rigorous and Christ-centered education in Orange County.
