TORSION

Torsion is a variation of pure shear where in a structural member is twisted, torsional forces produce a
rotating motion about the longitudinal axis of one end of the member relative to the other end.
TORSION FORMULA:
T=TC/J
T=Torsion
C=Outer radius
J=Moment of inertia

Statically inderteminate Shafts:

SHEAR STRESS
When opposite and equal transverse forces P and P applied to a member,shearing stress is created.

APPLICATION
Average shearing stress:
Tave=P/A=F/A
T=shearing stress
P=Force
A=Cross sectional area
*Shearing stress found in
bolts,pins and rivets
connecting two structural
members or machine components.

SINGLE AND DOUBLE SHEAR:

Single:
Tave=P/A =F/A
Double shear:
Tave=F/2A
