1) Determine the differential equation of motion for the damped vibratory

system shown. What type of motion occurs?
Given M = 25 kg, k = 100 N/m, c = 200 Ns/m

2) A machine has a mass of 400 kg and is mounted on vibration absorbers

which provide a total stiffness of 180 kN/m and damping equivalent to
0.2 of critical damping. Part of the machine has a mass of 2 kg and
reciprocates vertically with a stroke of 60 mm at a frequency of 10 Hz.
Determine
a) the amplitude of forced vibration of the machine and the phase angle
by which the displacement lags the excitation force
b) the magnitude of vibration force transmitted to the ground and its
phase angle relative to the excitation force.

3) The block, having a weight W, is immersed in a liquid such that the

damping force acting on the block has a magnitude of F = c|v|. If the
block is pulled down at a distance d and released from rest, determine
the position of the block as a function of time. The spring has a stiffness
k. Assume that positive displacement is downward.
Given:
W 60 N
k 900
g 9.8
c 12

d 0.2 m

4) The circular disk of mass M is attached to three springs, each spring

having a stiffness k. If the disk is immersed in a fluid and given a
downward velocity v at the equilibrium position, determine the equation
which describes the amplitude of the motion at any instance of time.
Assume that positive displacement is measured downward, and that
fluid resistance acting on the disk furnishes a damping force having a
magnitude F = cv.
Given:
M 4 kg
k 180 N/m
c 60 kg/s
120
v 0.3 m/s

5) A trailer has a mass of 500 kg and the suspension system plus tyre provide
a stiffness of 5 MN/m and damping of 20 kNs/m. The trailer can be
considered as a single degree of freedom spring, mass, damper system.
The trailer is towed along a test track which has a surface close to the form
of a sine wave, with an amplitude of 6 mm and a wave length of 1.2m.
What will be the amplitude of displacement for the trailer when towed at a
speed of 20 m/s, assuming the wheels remain in contact with the ground at
all times?
