32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The first reading of this weekend is one of my

favorite passages from the bible. The spiritual treasure
contained in the exchange between the widow of
Zarephat and the prophet Elijah is one to revisit every
time we are in any kind of need.
I want to make reference to John 12:24 where
Jesus introduces what I call a contradicting logic:
Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and
dies, it remains only a single seed Jesus used this
logic to tell his disciples of the reason of his later
death. He needed to die in order to give us life. How
was that logic?
What happened to the widow of Zarephat was
something along the lines of that same logic. Her
depressing situation was nothing else than a dark
waiting for death. She had nothing but a bit of flower
for a last cake. The prophet Elijah made an unnerving
request that could make anyone question his integrity.
He saw a woman and her son at the point of death, and
he took the last bite of food from their mouth as if not
aware of the seriousness of their situation. But the
woman did not complain with indignation as anyone
would. She politely gave away what she most needed.
I think thats the spiritual teaching: Most times,
we go on in life acquiring what we think we need, and
when we dont get it, we turn with indignation against
God, asking why? Where are you? I am sure that
many people who are away or distant from God would
identify with the idea that God cheated them, or that
God did not give them what they needed, or even
better, that God took away the little they had.
A simple, very challenging teaching: What is it
that you most need? Are you willing to give it up? I
am proud to say that, overall, our parish gets the point.
We are a struggling parish, made up of hard working
families who sacrifice a lot everyday to meet daily
needs, but even so, we were able to not only meet our
goal for the To Teach Who Christ Is but to exceed it
by far. We are willing to give what we most need.
Thank you!

No tena
ms quieres? Ests dispuesto a darlo? Estoy
Gracias!

Tis the Season to Celebrate

Es la temporada para celebrar

Does your child/children enjoy traditional

celebrations or activities at school?
The students at St. Joseph School partake in many
annual celebrations that embrace culture and our
Catholic faith. During the month of October, we
started each morning praying a decade of the rosary.
Recently junior high students created decorations and
a display for Dia de los Muertos. They learned
about the activities and beliefs of different cultures
while working on their writing skills.
Everyone knows that November is the time to be
thankful. Students will offer prayers for loved ones
daily. On November 11th, the school will meet in the
gym to honor and pray for all military men and
women. The school is also be preparing items for our
Thanksgiving feast. This celebration feeds our very
large family of more than 200 people.
