It has often been said that art is a reflection of life. From both a societal and individual
standpoint, I believe this statement holds true. Evidence exists in the troubled faces of
those in expressionist paintings, the sleek, industrial lines of modern architecture, and the
poetic words of writers from all eras. Throughout most of my lifetime, dance has provided
me the opportunity to share my life experiences, and reflect my viewpoint of the world to
others.
For as long as I can remember, dance has been a constant, forever blurring the line
between art and life. This art form has been, and in some ways, will always be my life.
However, my dedication to synthesizing my life experiences in my training, performing,
and creating, has not always come easily. I have sustained many injuries as a result of
dance, some of which have caused me to momentarily cease its inclusion in my life. While
these injuries have presented themselves as artistic roadblocks, they have also ignited a
passion for anatomically analyzing dance from a scientific standpoint. As a response to
these injuries, I have chosen to incorporate kinesiology in my studies and approach to the
art form, furthering my artistic reflection.
As a performer, I tend to move in a smooth, yet dynamic manner, exhibiting a sense of
quiet strength. Contemporary movement is my preferred style, however; I push myself to
bring aspects of other genres into my performance qualities. It is in the contrast and
synthesis of these qualities that the viewer is able to see me in my purest form. The
dynamics of my movement mimic the dynamic lifestyle I lead as both an artist and a
scientist. I strive to live outside of the norm, pushing myself above mediocrity in all
aspects of life. This determination comes through in my ability to command attention
without being the center of attention on a stage.
As a choreographer I strive to utilize my art form in both an autobiographical and
biographical way. I am very interested in analyzing and portraying how our individual
paths of life differ and intersect. I am constantly in wonder at the relationship of individuals
to the whole, and seek to create choreography that challenges my viewers to examine their
personal relationship to themselves, others, and the world. Overall, as a performer and a
choreographer, I strive to allow the audience to experience art as a reflection of life,
discovering what that means to them.
