Focus of Observation: Toddler Environments

Observe the environment of a campus toddler lab (The toddler lab is for children who range in age from 18 to
35 months)
Use the following Environmental Checklist to evaluate the items you see being present or implemented
For items you do not see write a note to the right of the item about what you would add or change
After completing the checklist

List at least five ways you can apply what you learned about toddler environments in your Toddler Lab next semester.
1.

I can always make sure to make the room inviting by adding color and texture to all of the activities.

2. I can add a little more comfy and soft furniture in multiple places in the room. I could use stuffed animals of
even a blanket.

3. I can make sure to keep each area clean and safe for the children to use. I can monitor which areas the
children are not going to and then I could change it to meet their needs.

4. I can open the blinds a little to add some more natural light into the toddler lab.

5. I can be creative in the activity centers and make sure that there are objects and furniture that draw the
children to the centers.
