After boot camp I was
sent to NAS North Island
San Diego, just across
the bay from where I had
boot camp. The squadron
I was with was the VS-41
anti-sub squadron that
tracked and destroyed
submarines. I was a plane
captain on a 52-E twin
prop plane. A plane captain's duties were similar

Miramar. I spent one year
at the 703 before being
transferred to VF-51 at
Miramar. The F8-J crusader is a single engine jet

being transferred to the USS

was becoming a dead art
then," King laughed, "and is
more so now.Nearly everything runs on nuclear power
now." King was discharged
from the service after two
years, 11 months and 28
days as a Seaman Second
Class. Later, King became a
firefighter in Wichita and
