Fred Satterthwaite
had just graduated from
Udall High School and
was drafted into the Navy
in February 1944. He
went to Idaho for boot
camp. In his training
he learned Morse code,
which he used in his
duties in the Navy. From
San Francisco, Calif. he
was shipped overseas to
served during the war in
Europe and the Pacific.
He was stationed in
Okinawa as a radio communicator out of a large
Quonset hut.
He said that the United
States and Japan intercepted each other's messages. He used radios
to dispatch to the ships.
One time he was climbing
up a large hill and knew
something was going to
happen because all the
ships were going out to
sea. Then a typhoon went
through Okinawa.
"When we were up
high we could see suicide planes coming in,"
he said. He just missed
being on a big old ship
that sank, but was saved
because he had an attack
of appendicitis.
Most people know
Fred as sheriff of Cowley
County from 1962-1985.
