Three World War II

veterans living in Udall

By JEANIE KISTLER
Special to the Courier

Udall still has three

World War II veterans
who all served in the
United States Navy.
Ray Lacey went to
Kansas City to enlist
in October 1945. He
hadn't graduated from
high school yet but he
didn't want to wait to
be drafted. He went on
to San Diego, Calif. for
boot camp. By Christmas
time he was on a troop
train to be shipped out
to the Philippine Islands,
where he served for nine
months. He was on the
clean-up crew and he saw

so many hungry people.

I always told my kids
to clean up your plate,"
he said.
Lacey met a kid from
Winfield with the last
name of Scott, which
made him feel a little
more at home. He was
discharged in a little over
a year.
His patriotism through
the years in Udall has
been very evident as he
has carried the flag at
events numerous times
and always has a flag flying his front yard. He is
probably most known for
putting on the car show
at the Udall Fall Festival
for many years.

Hawkins
(Continued from page 8)
ered coffin,
They show respect by
removing their hats.
I was a soldier and I'm
not ashamed to say,
I weep every time the
bugle blows taps.
I did my time and am
now retired,
Walking my hometown
streets with pride.
Not one civilian I pass
could ever know,
The pain and hell inside
me that I hide.

"This is for all my brothers-in-arms," Hawkins said.

"I've got your six covered."
