Valvula Lo Torc
Valvula Lo Torc
accomplished in minutes with the valve body left in the line. Total disassembly of the
entire valve involves removing only two capscrews, adjusting nut, and handle adapter or
wrench. Every part in the Lo Torc valve may be replaced with standard parts. None of the
parts requires factory return of the valve for servicing.
Even in high pressure services, the Lo Torc plug valve is easy to operate. Unique
design characteristics make this possible:
1. The cylindrical plug eliminates jamming or wedging induced by pressure acting against differential
areas (a problem inherent with a tapered plug).
2. The plug is further pressured balanced by identical stem seals at each end. This feature eliminates
costly and inefficient thrust bearings.
3. A initial seal between the plug and valve inserts is obtained without lapping, selective assembly, or
excessive force. The valve inserts are tapered on the OD to match the valve body cavity. The inner
surfaces of the inserts are precision ground to exactly the same diameter as the plug. The inserts are
parted into identical halves that, when aligned in the valve body by using the adjusting nut, transmit a
firm, uniform clamping action to the sealing area.
4. The plug and inserts are free to "float" downstream to compensate for temporary body deflection. As
pressure is increased, the seal between plug and downstream insert half is made more effective. Since
only a small area is under direct mechanical bearing, the operating torque does not become excessive.
(In most other valve designs, the entire plug surface contacts the body and is subjected to frictional
forces.)
5. Frictional forces are also reduced by the design of the stationary o-ring seal between inserts and body
cavity. Differential pressure acts on the section of the insert sealed by the o-ring, transmitting a force
against the plug. Since the seal area is smaller than the bearing area, this compressive force is
considerably less than similar forces encountered in valves that do not have this design. Reduction of this
force is directly responsible for reducing operating torque without sacrificing seal efficiency.
1. Valve body. The Lo Torc valve body is alloy steel, heat treated for extra strength and durability for
high pressure service.
2. Plug design and material. The balanced cylindrical design of the plug (or core) eliminates longitudinal
loading. To resist corrosion, the plug is made of stainless steel (standard on every Lo Torc valve).
3. Valve inserts. The valve inserts are tapered on the OD to provide easy adjustment for maximum
sealing and plug alignment. The inserts are machined with a raised surface surrounding the o-ring
groove. This raised surface (boss) is the only portion of the insert which contacts the valve body and
serves as the bearing area on the plug. This design reduces the torque required to operate the valve.
Various types of inserts are available. Ductile iron or cast iron inserts (depending on size) are
recommended for general fluid service applications. Sealing is due to metal-tometal contact between the
insert and the plug.
For sour or corrosive service, aluminum bronze inserts are available.
4. End connections. The end connections are hammer union, threaded, or flanged. Flanged connections
conform to the dimensional and material requirements of API 6A. Grayloc hubs, butt welds, and other
custom end connections also are available.
5. Adjusting nut. The adjusting nut is alloy steel. An o-ring seal is provided around the adjusting nut.
6. O-ring seals. For standard service, 90-durometer nitrile o-rings seals are recessed into grooves in each
insert and below the adjusting nut threads. For corrosive applications and temperature extremes, Teflon
or fluoroelastomer o-rings are available.
7. Plug seals. The stem diameters at the top and bottom of the plug are sealed by specially designed
packing rings made of 75 durometer nitrile permanently bonded to brass reinforcing washers. For
moderate temperatures with corrosive fluids or solvents, seals of fluoroelastomer with a stainless steel
backing ring are available. For applications involving extreme temperatures or the handling of highly
corrosive media, a Teflon seal ring, self-energized by an inconel spring, can be provided. Maximum
service temperatures are 250F for nitrile and fluoroelastomer and 300F for Teflon.
8. Lubrication system. Lubricant is supplied through the conveniently-placed grease fitting, giant buttonhead type. The lubrication chambers above the below the plug are connected by recesses between the
two valve inserts.
9. Valve operation. Full operation of the valve requires only a quarter turn (90) of the plug. A steel
wrench or a cast steel handle adapter, equipped with equidistant operating bar sockets is available for all
valves with bore sizes from 1 in. through 3-1/8 in. This socket design is intended to simplify operation of
the valve, regardless of its installed position or location. An operating bar is also available for use with
the handle adapter. Valves with 3-1/16-in. and larger bores are operated with a gear operator.
Pneumatic or hydraulic actuators are available on special order for all valve sizes.
10. Sour service. Valve assemblies for sour service conform to NACE MR 01-75. Plugs of monel or 316L
stainless, aluminum bronze inserts, and seals of Teflon or fluoroelastomer are used.
11. Certification. All Lo Torc plug valve assemblies are traceable. Material chemical certificates and
pressure test certificates are available for any valve assembly. Valves identified as "certified" also have
mechanical properties included with the material certificates. Certificates should be requested at the time
of ordering.
Lo Torc Plug Valve - Threaded Ends Female API Line Pipe Threads
Ring joint type flanged ends are standard on Lo Torc valves. Other flanged end connections are available on
special order.
Gear operator for 4-1/16 in., 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000 full opening Lo Torc plug valves with flanged ends.

Torc plug valve are included in special service valves.
Lo Torc Plug Valve Specifications - Special Service Valves - Line Pipe Threads
1 Overall length (Dimension A) is face to face of the thread half to nut body only. The extension of the wing nut
is not indluded.
2 Lo Torc plug valves with 2-in. 1502 and 3-in. 1502 connections are available with certification: part numbers
9.1277 (1 in.), 9.1267 (2 in.) and 11.5091 (3 in.). Product certificates are availablerequest when ordering.
Weights and dimensions are the same as given for the standard, 1-in., 2-in., and 3-in. valves listed above. Other
sizes available on request.
3 Operating torque is given for direct stem operated valves only, and at maximum rated working pressure. The
torque given is an average reading of new valves tested with water. 3-in. and 4-in. size valves are equipped with
manual gear operators so direct stem operation is not required.
CAUTION: The fact that a valve has never leaked in service does not necessarily mean that the inserts do
not need to be replaced. The inserts may wash out and cause the valve body to erode before leakage is
noted. A planned program of maintenance at specific intervals is the key to keeping downtime and repair
cost at a minimum. For Lo Torc plug valve applications involving throttling or choking, the all metal
inserts should be used.
(12) and inserts (10). If necessary, place a wooden block on top of the plug stem and tap
downward.
At this point, the valve body (1) should be inspected for any interior erosion or pitting. Oring (11) on the inserts should be replaced if needed. The o-ring (8) sealing the adjusting
nut should also be replaced if worn. Replacing the plug stem packing (9) at the top and
bottom of the plug is usually necessary.
If the valve shows signs of leakage, or if inserts show any excessive wear or pitting, the
inserts should be replaced with standard parts (see part listing on back page).
Wipe all old lubricant from inside the valve body.
Reassembly
Install o-rings in recesses of inserts and in adjusting nut groove.
Install plug stem seals (9) in recesses in the top of the valve body and in adjusting nut.
The seal backing ring is to be positioned away from pressure.
Coat cleaned plug, inserts, and adjusting nut (threads) with recommended plug valve
lubricant.
Fill void spaces inside the body with the same lubricant. This lubricant may be ordered in
3/4-lb packages under part number 70.31058.
Install lower end of plug through adjusting nut and push down to shoulder. Use
capscrews, flat washer, and lock washer to secure plug to adjusting nut. Tighten
capscrew.
Check for proper positioning of insert retaining pins(13) inside valve body.
Place inserts on adjusting nut around plug, aligning flow holes in inserts with hole through
plug.
Place plug, inserts, and adjusting nut into valve body with insert retaining pins keying into
slots in inserts.
Tighten adjusting nut into body with prescribed torque for adequate sealing (see
adjustment below).
Install stop collars and handle adapter (or wrench) on top of valve. Be sure flow indicators
are in line with the slot in the top stem of the plug.
Rotate plug several times to distribute excess lubricant through flow passage of body.
Lubricate the valve through the grease fitting(3) on top of the valve body to insure total
filling of the void spaces inside the valve.

Extremely high working pressure may require torque settings at the upper end of the
prescribed range to properly seal the valve. If so, this higher torque adjustment should be
maintained by checking the adjusting nut at regular intervals.
