Lab 6
Cold Weather- Equipment

Date:
Supervisor:
Lead Teacher:

Makayla Bair

Preassessment and Findings:

Many children tend to notice the things that their parents do but they dont really understand what they do. For example they
have seen snow equipment but they dont really know the idea of what a basic type of snow equipment is used for. I find that
children dont understand what snow equipment is used for and the purpose of this lesson is to teach children what it is and how
it is used. Children will be able to see snow equipment and understand the purposes of it.

Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. When it snows outside ice forms on a car. In order to remove the ice from a car you have to use an
ice scraper to get it off.
2. A snow shovel is used to clear a path to make it easier to walk.

a picture by dipping cars or trucks in paint and roll on
paper to create a picture.
Teachers will set out paper and different colors of paint
for students. Students will dip cars in paint and create
a picture. One teacher will supervise to make sure
students know what they are doing.
Objective: The child will use their imagination and
express themselves by creating a picture with the
tracks of cars. (D4G46) Children will understand the
tracks that snow materials leave when they design a
picture with car tracks. For those younger children who
this is difficult for, they will use spatial intelligence and
use a paint brush and draw car tracks as they think
they are.

Objective: Children will be able to show strength and
coordination of small motor muscles by building
different things with legos. (D1G18)
* Math: Comparing &

Teachers will set out measuring tapes, a snow shovel, Teddy Bear Counters/
and ice scraper. Students will use counters to count out RR1/Red37
the measurement of each item. Students can then
visually see the difference between the measurements
of the materials.
A teacher will supervise to make sure students are safe
with materials.
*For more advanced children, have them measure
aluminum cans or the size of their hand. Have other
objects out for students to compare measurements.

Language/ Literacy:
Matching letters (5)

Objective:Children will be able to demonstrate

understanding of measurable attributes of objects

letters. Students will match uppercase letters with
lowercase letters and will say sound when they match
it. When students get a match they will toss a cotton
ball into a snowmans mouth. The snowman will be a
face on top of a trashcan.
Teachers will set out the materials for students and
instruct the students on what to do.

Objective:
Children will demonstrate awareness of letters and
symbols by matching capital letters with lowercase
letters. (D5G57)
Science: Observations Students will use magnifying glasses to look at real

bugs in glass. They can make inferences about the
bugs and understand the structures by looking at the
bugs.
Teachers will set out materials for students and
students will be able to observe the bugs.
Objective:Children observe, describe, and collect
information by exploring the world around them.

Dramatic Play:
Snow Caving

Objective: Students will make a connection to the

outside world by exploring how snow feels and what it
does in the environment. (D1G14)
Students will play with cars and trucks and be creative cars and trucks/RR1/
with their skills.

off the ramps.
Teachers will set out materials for students to explore
with.
Objective: Children will be able to manipulate small
objects with ease (D1G18)
The dramatic play will be a snow cave to play in. The

cave.
Teachers will enhance students learning by asking
them about the snow cave that they create. Ask them
what they do in the snow cave and how they would feel
living in the snow cave.
Objective: The children in this activity will be able to
build relationships with their peers. (D3 G28) This will
be done through providing opportunities for the child
to engage in play with others. We can tell that this is
accomplished as the children work together to play
with the common idea of a snow cave. This will help
the children learn the point that you need to pack snow
to make a cave, and snow is made of ice crystals that
are packed together. You can also talk to children while
they are playing and ask them about hibernation or the
activities that they do

them. (D5G57)

2:20-2:50 a.m.

Location: North or South

Gross Motor:
*Shoveling snow

Children will use child sized snow shovels to clean

snow out of a specific set aside area.
Teachers will monitor students to make sure they are
safe with the snow shovels. Students will pick an area
where they want to shovel and clear the pathway.
Objective:
Children will use their whole body to clear a walkway
with snow shovels. (D2G17)

2nd: Red Light, Green

Light

Have students play red light green light while jumping go sign (IWP)
on one foot. Children will line up on one side while a
stop sign (IWP)
teacher yells red, light, or green light. Students will
play until one student gets to the end first. Keep
playing and make it fair for all students.
Use stop sign and go sign to signify to students what
signs to use.
*For younger students, have them play using two feet.
Teachers will yell red light or green light and monitor
safety of the game.
Objective:
Balances on one foot; hops forward on one foot.
(D2G17)
Play forward, reverse. Children try to get to the end of
the set aside area.

3rd: Forward, Reverse

Teachers will yell forward or reverse and tries to get to

the end of the road. Teachers will monitor students
Students will begin by running one direction. A teacher
will yell reverse. Students will then run back in the
opposite direction. Children will listen to directions
from a teacher who yells forward or reverse. Students
will run in the way that they are instructed. The goal is
to be the first one to reach the finish line.
Objective: Children will change direction as instructed.
Students will use kinesthetic movements to play this
game. (D2G17)

CLEAN UP
2:50-2:55 a.m.
The team will sing the clean up song all together to allow transition time for students.
GATHERING TIME
2:55-3:10 a.m.
Transition
Throw cotton balls on floor and tell students to pick up the cotton balls as they come to gathering time
where they will throw them all in the snowman trashcan and sing once there was a snowman. As
students come to gathering time, they will join in singing once there was a snowman and then we will
sing the song twice and allow time for students to come to gathering time.

several students some ice melt and have them dump

that we can use salt to clear the walk ways because salt
helps to get rid of the ice.

want them to identify. Then have the student throw a
bean bag at that number and say the number.
