What s ISM?
ISM is a course provided at Clear
Springs High School that enables
students to meet with a mentor in
a career of their choice to explore
future career options.

It is administered by Mrs. Kristi

My Mentors Background
Dr. Scott first began her education
in at University of A&M, in
Biomedical Sciences, graduating in
1996.
She then proceeded to earn her
DDS at University of Texas Medical
Branch at Houston in 2001and
went on to get her Orthodontic
Residency and Masters of Science
in Dentistry (MDS) at Saint Louis
University in Saint Louis, 2004.
Why I Chose This Project
I have been going to Radney and
Scott Orthodontics since I was 12
years old, and being around
orthodontics is what influenced my
decision to mentor in orthodontics
and see if that is what I want to do
as a future career.

My project is based on the theory

that if a lower removable splint is
applied to the Herbst appliance it
will decrease or eliminate the effect
of lower incisor flaring.
Dr. Scott helped me develop this
project because when I first talked
to her about mentoring me she
mentioned it as a good project idea
so I stuck with it so I could develop
it earlier.

Herbst Project
Introduction
This semester I will be studying the
Herbst appliance, the effects on the
teeth, mouth and jaw. For my product, I
will make a model representation to show
the growth of the jaw and movement
within the mouth going along with my
model, I will be going through several
different cases with Dr. Scott and
analyzing what variables lead to the best
results of the appliance.

What is a Herbst?
The Herbst appliance is an orthodontic
device, that is used in cases of over-bites,
that forces the jaw to grow forward,
without causing the teeth to flare, making
the over-bite disappear.

Important Vocabulary
Here I will present some terms that will
need to be reviewed before going on with
the presentation.
Condylar Process- a bone part of the
upper jaw.
Coronoid Process- a bone part of upper
jaw.
Over-bite- When the top of your mouth,
juts further out then the bottom of your
mouth.

How the Herbst Appliance is Applied

I will be able to have the chance to
observe Dr. Scott put in the
appliance, but for now this is my
knowledge due to research on how it
is performed.

The Orthodontist begins by placing

four molar bands around the first
molars, that are connect to one
another by a metal wire. The wire on
top of the mouth is laid straight
across, while the bottom wire follows
around the bottom row of teeth.
The bottom molar bands have an
extension on them that will be used
to attach the upper and lower, the
extension may vary in size
depending on the circumstances of
your mouth.
Next, the upper and lower molars
are connect by placing a metal
sleeves and rods that will force your
lower jaw forward, without causing
flaring to the teeth.

Herbst Designs
Result Variables.
Dr. Scott and I have taken from 50
different patients who have completed

their treatment and looked at the

degree of the central lower incisors in
the initial phase of treatment and the
second phase.

Final Product
For my final product, I hope to
construct my own model of the Herbst
appliance to demonstrate to my
graders and my mentor what I have
learned from observing and
participating in the Herbst appliance
device construction . I want to present
my knowledge on how it can be
perfectly applied to give great results
to a patient.

Conclusion
The Herbst appliance is an
appliance that has been changing
the dynamics of orthodontics. It
can change the shape of a
patients mouth, to fix an overbite, without causing the teeth to

flare out. It is a permanent fix

and can be very effective when
used correctly. With my project I
am hoping to be able to present
how this device is best used on
patients and who will benefit
most from it.
Thank You!
I would like to thank my mentor,
Dr. Meredith Scott for helping me
on this educational journey.
I would like to also thank my
mentor and teacher Mrs. Click for
helping me achieve my goals
throughout the year.
I would like to thank my graders
for taking time out of there
schedule to give me an
opportunity to show them my
work.
And I would like to thank my
parents for letting me take this

opportunity, for their love and

support, and for providing me
with resources I need to achieve
my goals.
