Qualitative Analysis of Group II Cations: Hg2+, Bi3+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Sn4+.
2.0 OBJECTIVE:
To identify the group II cations in solutions.
3.0 CHEMICALS:
3.1 Solutions of Hg2+, Bi3+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Sn4+.
3.2 NH3
3.3 NaOH
3.4 KI
3.5 K2CrO4
3.6 HgCl2
3.7 Solution B1
3.8 Solution B2
4.0 PROCEDURE:
4.1 Part A: Reactions of Group II Cations
4.1.1
4.1.2
4.1.3

4.1.4
4.1.5
4.1.6

A small amount of ammonia solution was added (drop wised) into the
sample. Then, an excess amount of ammonia was added.
A small amount of NaOH solution was added (drop wised) into the
sample. Then, an excess amount of NaOH was added.
A small amount of potassium iodide, KI solution was added (drop
wised) into the sample. Then, an excess amount of the reagent was
added.
A small amount of potassium chromate, K2CrO4 was added into the
sample. Then, an excess amount of the reagent was added.
For Sn2+ and Sn4+ only. Some mercury (II) chloride, HgCl2 solution was
added into the sample.
The solutions were observed, and the observations were recorded in a
table.

4.2 Part B: Identification of the Cations Present in Unknown Samples.

4.2.1

The tests as in Part A was carried out on Solution B1 and Solution B2.

4.2.2 The cation present in each solution was identified.
