Qualitative Analysis of Cations

Cations are usually classified into six groups. Each group has a common reagent that can be used to separate
them from the solution. Because cationic analysis is based on the solubility products of the ions, meaningful
results can be obtained only if separation is performed in a specified sequence. This is due to the fact that some
ions of one group may also react with the reagent of another group.

1. Group I Cations: Insoluble Chlorides

Members: (Ag+, Hg22+ and Pb2+)

2. Group II Cations: Insoluble sulphides in acidic medium

Members: (Hg2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Bi3+, Cd2+, As3+, Sb3+ and Sn4+)

3. Group III Cations: Insoluble sulfides or hydroxides in alkaline medium

Members: (Al3+. Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cr3+, Zn2+ and Mn2+)

4. Group IV Cations: Carbonate precipitates

Members: (Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+)

5. Group V Cations: Soluble Group of Cations

Members: (Mg2+, Na+, K+ and NH4+)
