MOLECULES, MOLES AND CHEMICAL EQUATION

A. Determine the weight of each of the following:

1. 0.25 moles of aluminum

Ar of aluminum = 27 g/mol
Weight of 0.25 moles of aluminum = 0.25 mol x 27 g/mol = 6.75 grams

2. 3.75 moles of silicon

Ar of silicon = 28 g/mol
Weight of 3.75 moles of silicon = 3.75 mol x 28 g/mol = 105 grams

3. 1.28 moles of CO2

Mr of CO2 = 12+32 = 44 g/mol
Weight of 1.28 moles of aluminum = 1.28 mol x 44 g/mol = 56.32 grams

4. 0.35 moles of CuSO4

Mr of CuSO4 = 64+32+(16x4) = 160 g/mol
Weight of 0.35 moles of CuSO4 = 0.35 mol x 160 g/mol = 56 grams

5. 2.95 x 1027 molecules of oxygen gas.

Mr of oxygen gas = 32 g/mol
Weight of 2.95 x 1027 molecules oxygen gas = (2.95 x 1027 ÷ 6.02 x 1023) x 32 g/mol
= 156810.63 grams
23
6. 1.20 x 10 molecules of hydrogen fluoride.
Mr of hydrogen fluoride = 1+19 = 20 g/mol
Weight of 1.20 x 1023 molecules oxygen gas = (1.20 x 1023 ÷ 6.02 x 1023) x 20 g/mol
= 3.98 grams

B. Determine the moles of each of the following:

1. 400 g NaOH (Mr NaOH = 23+16+1 g/mol) = 400 g ÷ 40 g/mol = 10 mol

2. 128 g K (Ar K = 39 g/mol) = 128 g ÷ 39 g/mol = 3.28 mol
3. 563 g CaCO3 (Mr CaCO3 = 40+12+(16x3) g/mol) = 563 g ÷ 100 g/mol = 5.63 mol
4. 69,9 g Na (Ar Na = 23 g/mol) = 69.9 g ÷ 23 g/mol = 3.04
5. 2,28 liter gas NO2 (STP) = 2.28 L ÷ 22.4 L/mol = 0.1017 mol
6. 560 ml gas H2 STP = (560 mL ÷ 1000) ÷ 22.4 L/mol = 0.025 mol

C. Balance the chemical equations below :

1. Carbon monoxide is commonly used to strip off oxygen atoms from metals. This
reaction shows the first step. If more CO is present, eventually all oxygen atoms will
be grabbed by CO and manganese (Mn) metal will be left. This is how metal ores get
converted to metals.
Before: MnO2 + CO  Mn2O3 + CO2
After: 2MnO2 + CO  Mn2O3 + CO2
2. Your automobile produces nitrogen dioxide because combustion in the cylinders
convert some nitrogen in the air to various nitrogen oxides. In contact with water,
nitrogen dioxide turns into nitric acid and nitrogen monoxide. Both are unhealthy.
Before: NO2 + H2O  HNO3 + NO
After: 3NO2 + H2O  2HNO3 + NO
3. All the combustion reactions need oxygen , like combustion of butane
Before: C4H10 + O2  CO2 + H2O
After: 2C4H10 + 13O2  8CO2 + 10H2O

Before: Al + O2  Al2O3
After: 4Al + 3O2  2Al2O3
