1. Calculate the mass of nitrogen that reacts with 30 g of hydrogen.

N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3

moles H2 = mass/Mr = 30/2 = 15 mol

moles N2 = 15/3 = 5 mol
mass N2 = Mr x moles = 28 x 5 = 140 g

Answer: 140 g

2. Calculate the mass of fluorine that reacts with 3.9 g of potassium.

2K + F2 → 2KF

moles K = mass/Mr = 3.9/39 = 0.10 mol

moles F2 = 0.10/2= 0.050 mol
mass F2 = Mr x moles = 38 x 0.050 = 1.9 g

Answer: 1.9 g

3. What mass of chlorine reacts with 8.1 g of aluminum?

2Al + 3Cl2 → 2AlCl3

moles Al = mass/Mr = 0.1/27 = 0.30 mol

moles Cl2 = 3.2 x 0.30 = 0.45 mol
mass Cl2 = Mr x moles = 71 x 0.45 = 31.95 g

Answer: 31.95 g

4. What mass of iron can be made from 20 kg of iron(III) oxide?

Fe2O3 + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO2

moles Fe2O3 = mass/Mr = 20000/160 = 125 mol

moles Fe = 2 x 125 = 250 mol
mass Fe = Mr x moles = 56 x 250 = 14000 g

Answer: 14000 g

5. What mass of hydrogen is needed to react with 31.8 mg of copper(II) oxide?

CuO + H2 → Cu + H2O

moles CuO = mass/Mr =0.0318/79.5 = 0.00040 mol

moles H2 = 0.00040 mol
mass H2 = Mr x moles = 2 x 0.00040 = 0.00080 g

Answer: 2.64g

6. Calculate the mass of calcium that can react with 40 g of oxygen.

2Ca + O2 → 2CaO

moles O2 = mass/Mr = 40/32= 1.25 mol

moles Ca = 2 x 1.25 = 2.50 mol
mass Ca = Mr x moles = 40 x 2.50 = 100 g

Answer: 100 g

magnesium oxide.
2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

moles Mg = 9.60/24 = 0.400 mol

moles O2 = 0.400/2 = 0.200 mol
mass O2 = 32 x 0.200 = 6.40 g

Answer: 6.40 g

8. What mass of ethanol could burn in 100 g of oxygen?

C2H5OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O

moles O2 = 100/32= 3.125 mol

moles C2H5OH = 3.125/3 = 1.04 mol
mass C2H5OH = 46 x 1.04 = 47.9 g

moles H2 = 0.0833 mol
mass H2 = 2 x 0.0833 = 0.167 g

Answer: 0.167 g

10. What mass of aluminium reacts with 50.0 g of chlorine to form aluminium
chloride?
