MEET THE GOVERNOR

Lion Dr. Nandana Kaluarachchi MJF JP
District Governor 2015/16
District 306A2
Lions Club of Mathugama
Lionstic Career - 2000 to Present

What led you to become a Lion?

My long standing passion to help the community
made me become a lion. I was already
involved in community service before I joined
Lionism and the fact that the service rendered by
a group rather than an individual is more effective,
convinced me to join the Lions clubs international.
Who has been your biggest source of inspiration
throughout the journey?
Each and every lion who is making an effort
to serve the community is an inspiration. Out
of all the lions, I highly regard and appreciate
the service, work ethics and professionalism
of Past International president Lion Mahendra
Amarasuriya. I have always been inspired by him
and proud that he is still serving our community. I
feel lucky to have worked with him.
What is the most memorable incident in your
Lionistic career?
As of now, the day that I officially took oath to
become the District Governor on District 306A2 in
Honolulu, Hawaii. I am humbly proud of the day
that I swore as the DG as it was a memorable
day, which reflected how hard I have worked for
Lionism.
You are a multi-faceted individual who has
played sports, studied medicine, considered to
be one of the greatest Lion ever in District 306A2
and a devoted husband and a father.how were
you able to achieve all this and be the prestigious
personality you are today?

The key is to concentrate on what you do at the

time being and dedicating 110% to it. When I
was playing sports, I dedicated myself to it, and
when I studied I did the same, which made me a
physician. When you prioritize the most important
thing to you over the other non-important thing at
that moment, you gain courage and strengths to
achieve the highest you can ever become.
What are your suggestions to take the Lionism
and Leoism into the future?
If we are to take Lionism in to the future, we have
to have a stronger network. We have to establish
more clubs with more productive members. We
have to motivate the current as well as the new
club members to stay active and participate in
the events to understand the true joy of Lionism.
Just enrolling in to a club, wont make you a
good, passionate Lion. Engaging in the activities
and experiencing the happiness of helping our
community is what makes you a great lion and
thats what makes you encouraged to take lionism in to the future and inspire others to join to this
good cause.
In order to take Leoism to the future, I think all
Leos have to do is follow Lions path. Lions clubs
initiate Leo clubs. Therefore, they should look up
to Lions and support Lions projects and should
always seek guidance from their Lions club
members. Also, most importantly respect them
asthey are your mentors. The vast experience
and advices Leos gain from Lions will help to
shape them at their younger ages to conquer the
future in every aspect.

How has the discipline of being a Lion helped you
in your personal life?
Being a Lion has helped me grow in many aspects
in my personal life such as time management
and multi tasking as we all have our own career
besides Lionism. I learned how to keep my
work life, personal life and lion life balanced
by managing my time effectively and by multi
tasking. Furthermore, I think I have improved
public speaking skills and organizing skills.
Now, what are your goals in both Lionstic career
& personal life?
In my Lionistic career I wish to be an inspiration
to my fellow lions and be an example of a very
successful governor by making my District
Governorship year a very productive one. In my
personal life, I aspire to be a better human being
every single day.

What do you think about the Leos of A2 and

what words of advice would you like to offer these
youth volunteers?
I have to take this opportunity to express how
proud I am of Leos of A2. They are a wonderful
group of strong young girls and boys with full of
energy. I clearly envision the success they are
going to achieve in future and I want to let them
know that I am always on their side to help them
in every way to make Leoism go forward.
As an advice I would like to say that all of you
would turn back someday and be immensely
happy and proud of this volunteering service
that you do today. Even it is oblivious; Leoism
is preparing you to be great leaders and very
forward individuals. These equalities are going to
help you in your future careers and it will prepare
you to face all the challenges you come across
in your careers as well as in your personal lives.
Therefore, first make sure you are well educated in
your field, and put your heart on this service and
gain the most valuable experience a youngster
can have only at this age of his/her life. It will
reward you endlessly!

Message from District President

Leading with Vision

When we are leading our youth towards a better future, we must have a Vision
where we are going to end up at the end. In Leoism we prepare the way, ensuring
that others will follow. Leaders make links between where people are and where
he or she is taking them. Because not surprisingly though, encouraging people to
move from current reality to new ground cause tension.
The key elements of leadership are the ability to create a vision, then to lead people towards its fulllment.
Leaders look for new opportunities or dierent ways to foster growth. Leaders nd the new and look to the
future, building on but not resting on current success.
Good Leo leaders also look for dierences and opportunities, rather than necessarily taking the most obvious
or popular route.
However, there is no point in being a visionary leader if your followers cant follow, no matter how enthusiastic they might be. This is where the importance of bridge building lies, as an essential complement to vision.
Theres a poem which teach us about vision
As I said if we take this tension to a rubber band which connects a current situation to a desired outcome. The
tension can either be relieved by lowering the vision, or by moving the current reality closer to that vision.
With this word I wish all my Leos a happy Leoistic year to Lead the Humanity!
Cheers!

Presidents Camp
2015

For a district to move forward in the Leo

movement,the contribution from the council
and the club presidents is very important.
Their commitment towards the district is a
critical factor for a district to be successful.
In order to create, improve and strengthen
the relationship between the council and
club presidents, Leo District 306A2 organized
a Presidents' and Council outing which
was held on the 15th and 16th of August at
HIGHLANDER'S ADVENTURE RESORT,
BELIHULOYA
Leo Kasun Lokugamage was the Chairman
of this camp which concluded to be a
huge successful event. Chief Guest for the
event was Chief Advisor for Leos, PDG, Lion
Kamal Senevirathne PMJF and his Lion Lady
Delrusha Senevirathne. Presence of MDP
Leo Dumindu Jayakody and PDPs of Leo
District 306A2 including IPDP Leo Chandima
Vithanage added an extra value to the
camp.

MDP Leo Dumindu Jayakody talked about

the relationship between Clubs, Districts
and the Multiple. He mentioned about
the importance of the contribution from
the clubs and the districts for the multiple
and about the responsibilities towards the
multiple. This created a better picture in the
minds of new Leos about the process of the
Districts and the Multiple.

On the first day, few activities were done

which were important in building trust
among team members and improving the
team spirit. The interactive sessions covered
by Senior Leos and Lion Kamal Senevirathne
PMJF were the most recognizable events
that took place on the first day.
Lion Kamal Senevirathne PMJF did an
important session which was about the
history of Leo and Lions Organizations and
Leo-Lion Relationship. As Leos who are
representing the district, it is very timely and
important to know about these, which will
ensure better results in whatever they are
engaged in, in the Leo movement.

PDP Leo Nadeesha Palliyaguru delivered his

presentation about an ongoing and a much
needed topic to be discussed among the
youth. It was about Motivation, Work-Life
balance and Career development. As we
know, every Leo is involved in work and/or
studies apart from being active in the Leo
movement. So, indeed this topic rendered a
great deal of support and guidance for all
the Leos.
Meeting procedures and Protocol which
was another topic to be given priority and
attention among the Leos was discussed
by DVP of Leo District 306A2 Leo Kesari
Senevirathne MJF.

Leo Constitution, which was indeed a very

fresh and an unknown topic to most of the
Leos, was brought into attention by PDP Leo
Isuru Senadheera.

In the night a Quiz and a cooking competition

was held and the day was concluded with a
campfire which brought the Leos into action
with a variety of talents.

Administration is the sole source which

reflects the status of a district. Better the
administration,better a district would be.
Leo clubs are the driving force of a district.
Better administered Leo clubs will eventually
contribute to make a better administered
district. So, to enhance the administrative
skills, the Club Officers' Workshop of Leo
District 306A2 was held on the 29th of August
at the Camilla School, Mattegoda from
8.30am onwards.
DCL Lion Thulitha Piyasena, Chief Advisor for
Leos, PDG, Lion Kamal Senevirathne PMJF,
MDP Leo Dumindu Jayakody, Past District
Presidents of 306A2 including IPDP Chandima
Vithanage, Club Presidents, Secretaries,
Treasurers and Leo Advisors representing all
the Leo Clubs and Council officers were
present to take part in this worthy cause.
DCL Lion Thulitha Piyasena and PDP Leo Isuru
Senadheera addressed the gathering, where
they highlighted the importance of this
opportunity for the Leoistic career and as well
as for the personal development of Leos.
The workshop for Presidents and Leo Advisors
was done with the participation of Lion Kamal
Senevirathne PMJF, DCL Lion Thulitha Piyasena, MDP Leo Dumindu Jayakody and DP
Pramod Wimalathunga.
Secretaries' Session was covered by PDP Leo
Nadeesha Palliyaguru,District Secretary Leo
Kasun Geeganage and Leo Chathuranga
Gunasekara. The secretaries were told
about their roles and responsibilities towards
their own clubs and to the district, process
of report writing and about the Contest
Guidelines.

District Treasurer Leo Poorni Kumbukage and

Leo Kalindu Dissanayake gave the relevant
details and knowledge for the Club Treasurers in a very simple but in a very detailed
manner, touching the basics of accounting
which are relevant to perform their duties.
Members of the Council were addressed
by MDP Leo Dumindu Jayakody, IPDP Leo
Chandima Vithanage and PDP Leo Kaneel
Maddumage.
Before the conclusion of the workshop,
Leo Kaneel Maddumage briefed about the
Leo Constitution, Meeting procedures and
Protocols which included a mock meeting,
because these are the key elements any Leo
leader should be aware of.
Leos are future leaders who have already
chosen their path to serve their communities
and have a positive impact on the society
through Leoism. Indeed the Club Officers'
Workshop was a great opportunity for them,
which provided clear guidelines and advices
to pave the way to meet their targets. This
wasn't merely about the Leo Career, but was
about developing personal skills, reporting
skills, communication skills and leadership
qualities which are equally important to one's
self development.

What are the things you gained through the LEO movement?
Mostly leadership skills, interpersonal skills and not
forgetting whole lots of friendships! Given an opportunity
to lead my club, I learnt how to manage my team and to
distribute workloads fairly; I also learnt the best ways in
communicating and forming a new friendly relationship
with other people especially when attending various Leo
events and meeting new people.
How do you feel about volunteering for community
service?
Personally I think it is the responsibility of each and every
one of us to serve the community. We should give back
to the community by serving them, helping those in
need so that they can feel the warmth me feel from the
community, even if it is just for that short while.
You were a Club President and have had a wide range
of experience in the Leo Movement, How would you
manage your personal life while giving your best to your
District?
I sometimes combine my personal life together with my
Leo life. For example, my best friends in college are
directors of my Leo board. So we always hang out
together, have study dates and unconsciously wed
always include Leo issues into our discussion.

NAME: Prisca Toh Wei Xuan

DATE of BIRTH: 17. 04. 1996
AGE: 19
POSITION: Immediate Past President
CLUB: Leo Club of Metro Methodist College Kuala Lumpur
Was in Leo club for one and a
half years.
In your view, what s LEO?
I think that Leo is an international society
which aims to serve the community. It is
also a perfect platform for students or even
working adults to build leadership skills,
and carrying out community service.
What made you to join this movement?
To be completely honest, I was in Interact
Club during high school. When I first
started college, I wanted to continue my
community service through Roteract Club,
however when one of my friends prompted
me to join the Leo Club, I thought, Why
not? Lets try something new then and till
this day, I never regretted my decision to
join the Leo Club. So in short, it was totally
by chance that I joined this club.

Where do you think LEO movement is, among the other

social service organizations in the world?
My answer might be bias, but I think that Leo can be
considered one of the most well-known organizations
in terms of social service that accepts both youngsters
and adults or even elderlies as club members. I can also
say that Leo club is one of the top, with the amount of
projects and funds donated and offered to the society of
each county.

On 30th of August 2015, many kite lovers were

gathered to the Mt.Lavnia beach. After some
time the sky was full of kites with dierent
colours and dierent shapes. Kites were ying
freely here and there in the sky. And each kite
was carried by a face lit up with a joyful smile
and who was also in a relax mood as same as
his kite. At the end participants were awarded
under three categories; Best Leo promoting
kite award, largest kite award and the most
creative kite.

There were about seventy participants for
