Beat vs. Rhythm

Objective

The students will successfully identify the


differences between beat and rhythm using the
bubblegum icons, with 100% accuracy, for 5
consecutive examples.

This can be connected to math by counting the beat


as they clap or counting the bubblegum on the beat
and then the rhythm and showing the difference
between the two that way. Can also use actual
bubblegum pieces to count.

Materials

Power point slide/worksheet of Bubblegum song and


pictures and (optional) bubblegum pieces

Step by step

1. Describe the difference between the rhythm


and steady beat.

2. Show the students the slide with the
bubblegum song on it
3. Sing the song to the students
4. Have the students clap the steady beat and
then the rhythm. (along with the bubblegum
icons)
5. Have the students place a piece of bubblegum
candy on the rhythm instead of the steady
beat (show the next slide)
6. Have the students clap the rhythm again while
teacher claps the steady beat to show how
they sound different. For older grades, split
the class into groups and have one clap the
steady beat while the other group claps the
rhythm.

7. Compare and contrast the two with discussion
