Assistive Technology Paper
Assistive technology is a way for students who have cognitive or physical impairments to
climb over the barriers that they often have to traditional learning. Some student cannot preform
everyday classroom tasks like writing down notes or using a cursor on a computer. Assistive
technology is a blanket term for devices/software/apps that are made to help these particular
students preform these tasks where they otherwise would not be able to.
The Braillex trio is a device for blind students. It is a brail keyboard with keys for music
and mathematics as well. It is very versatile and is connected via Bluetooth which makes it more
accessible for the student and the teacher. The keys have ridges and bump symbolizing different
numbers, letters, and symbols. It costs $5,680 and can be found on Emptech.info for sale.
The Accessibar is an assistive technology software that can be downloaded for free from
accessibar.mozdev.org. This software is used by autistic students who need to view altered
versions of certain webpages. This software allows you to change the background color, font size
and color, and hide and enlarge different pictures.
The EyeGaze Edge is a device that hooks up to your computer and tracks eye movements
to preform certain tasks. This allos students with orthopedic impairments or traumatic brain
injuries to preform tasks with their eyes that would not originally be possible with their limits.
They can now type documents, speak/hold conversations with others, browse the internet, etc.
They cost upwards of $500 and can be found on Eyegaze.com.

The Livescribe Digital Pen is a device that records what you are drawing/writing and
sends it via Bluetooth to whatever device you prefer. This device helps students with ADHD who
can not give their full undivided attention in class and who have a hard time keeping up with the
instructors notes. The cost $150 and can be found on Store. Livescribe.com.
The Sip and Puff Switch is an assistive technology device for people who suffer form an
orthopedic impairment and or traumatic brain injury. This product allows the user to use puffs
and sips into a mouth tube to control a cursor for a computer. This same product is now being
used with controlling wheelchairs as well. The cost anywhere from $51-$99 and can be found on
orin.com.
Read2Go is an ipad app that can be found for. $19.99 on the iTunes store. This app reads
material such as textbooks used in class out loud. This app is good for students with learning
disabilities such as dyslexia who have a hard time keeping up with reading in class.
In conclusion, there are many different types of assistive technology that are available to
students. These devices, although sometimes expensive, can be the means by which a student
learns in the classroom. These products can increase a students opportunities for future jobs,
everyday social interaction, and further education.
