Now that it is

getting colder
out, make sure
to send hats and
gloves to school
with your child.

From the Desk of Mrs. Bernal

Winter break is quickly approaching
and I want to take this time to wish
everyone a wonderful and safe
holiday. Thank you for your
continued support so far this year! It
amazes me how much each child has
grown since the beginning of the year.
As we move into the second
semester, the students will begin to
be challenged even more. Continue
to read with them nightly as a way to
improve their reading skills. Reading
is the foundation for everything! If
you have any questions or concerns,
do not hesitate to call your childs
teacher. Thank you to everyone that
attended Parent-Teacher
Conferences.

Food Drive
Thank you to everyone that sent in
food for the food drive. We were
able to feed 9 families for
Thanksgiving. A big THANK YOU to
the a generous donor. Mrs. Renfer
was able to purchase turkeys for all of
the baskets!

Bernals Lunch Buddies

Students had an awesome time with our special
guests, Sgt. Moore, Office Nelson and Mayor
Keckler, during Bernals Lunch Buddies. They
were able to sit inside the police cars and even
got to hear the sirens. Jac and Dos donated the
yummy pizzas for everyone to eat!

Leader in Me
We will finish teaching the last habit, Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw. Sharpen the Saw focuses on having balance in your life
because Balance is Better! It is great to see the students using the 7 Habits as part of their daily language in the
classroom, as well as in the cafeteria and on the playground! Once all of the habits have been covered, teachers will
continue to review and practice the habits through further direct instruction and teachable moments. Hopefully your
child is using the language at home and putting it into action. I know I tell my own children they need to Put First
Things First, especially when it comes to homework!

Helpful Hints:
Read a favorite story more than once. If your child asks for a story to be read again---READ IT AGAIN! The
repetition assists your child in gaining word recognition, story sequence, vocabulary, and story book language.
Focus on enjoyment. Choose stories that both of you will enjoy. Think about what your childs favorite things are or
what they like to do.
Read traditional tales and rhymes such as Little Red Riding Hood and Old Mother Hubbard as well as stories that
play with language such as the books by Dr. Seuss.

Junior Achievement Day at Riley School

AmVets Coloring Contest Winners

Congratulations to our Riley second grade students that
won the coloring contest for the AmVets! Each student
received a gift certificate for being chosen.

Riley students had the opportunity to learn about Career

Development, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Literacy
principles during our Junior Achievement Day. Each
classroom had a volunteer from Huntington Bank to
come in their classroom and complete activities based
on the topics. Students loved the activities and the
volunteers enjoyed working with all of the students!

Thank you for your support! This is such a

wonderful opportunity for our community and
students!
