-Does your Inquiry

content align with the
CCSS for the
appropriate grade level?

My lesson was aligned with the CCSS for the appropriate level. The experiment was grade level
appropriate. The problem that occurred was that the experiment did not go as well as planned. We did
not practice the experiment beforehand. We watched a video and read the directions for it but never
practiced it. We forgot to put the hot water in a small cup and drop it in slowly into the container; which
would have made the hot water float on the surface. In addition, we needed larger containers because
the cold and hot water mixed too easily in the smaller one. Even though the experiment did not go as
planned, we showed a video to the class so they could see what was supposed to happen. If we were
going to do this lesson again, we would make the adjustments and practice it multiple times beforehand
to make sure it worked.

Criteria

-Does your Inquiry

Based Science Lesson
fully demonstrate
connection to topic
taught?

I believe the lesson demonstrated the topic of Heat Energy. We went over the broad topic of Heat
Energy with the ice cube anticipatory set and the heat energy skits and then moved into a more narrower
topic of Convection, Conduction, and Radiation. Our PowerPoint went through the three topics and we
gave real life examples. In addition, the game at the end of the lesson reinforced the lesson and the
students connected it to real life. Because of time restraints and safety issues we were unable to do an
experiment for all three topics. We chose Convection because we did not have to use an extremely hot
surface to demonstrate it. If there was more time and if we were in a proper science classroom we could
have used stove tops and other methods to show heat energy.

Delivery

Do you deliver the

lesson clearly, at a good
rate, volume and speed?

We planned our lesson out very carefully and followed the pace of our PowerPoint. We waited for the
class to write down notes from the PowerPoint but because of time restraints we could not wait for the
appropriate amount of time. We also split the lesson up evenly so we each had a turn to speak and that
one person was not talking for a long period of time. The only word I heard myself say a couple times
was Um but other than that I was consciously aware of the words I used.

Do you hear yourself

continually saying:
Um? Like? Gonna?

I researched the topic thoroughly by using the PowerPoint on Desire 2 Learn, online resources, and
children's websites. I looked at childrens websites so I understood what type of language I should have
been using and how to explain it on a fourth grader's level. If I was going to have to go more in depth
about the topic I would have done more research but for the lesson I believe I knew the right amount of
information. For what we wanted the students to know by the end of the lesson, we presented the right
amount of information.

Experiment

Does your experiment

completely follow the
6E Model by allowing
students to Engage,
Explore, Explain,
Elaborate, and Evaluate
throughout the hands
on activity?

Presentation Week: Week 1

Grade Level: 4th Grade

The experiment completely followed the 6E Model and we wrote in the lesson plan where each model
came into play. In the beginning the students were engaged when coming up with skits for their type of
Heat Energy. The students explained and elaborated when they pair-shared about they learned about the
lesson. During the experiment the model explore was present because the students made a hypothesis
and were able to see the two different ways the experiment could be done. At the end of the lesson there
was evaluation and e-learning when the students placed their real life examples of conduction,
convection, and radiation in the correct place. They also watched a video and used hand motions when
they heard or read certain words.

engage all types of

and visual learners?)

Self/Peer Review

Were your classmates

peer review
submissions similar to
how well you believed
you did when
presenting your Inquiry
based lesson and

Presentation Week: Week 1

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Our lesson engaged all types of learners. The anticipatory set that had the students melt ice cubes helped
kinesthetic learners and visual learners watch heat energy happen before their eyes. With the skits in the
beginning of the lesson, it engaged the class and it helped visual and auditory learners visualize and hear
about types of heat energy. When we explained what convection, conduction, and radiation was we
reached all three learners. Visual learners were able to read what was written on the PowerPoint, look at
the hand motions for each word, and were able to write the information on their worksheet. Auditory
learners were able to hear what was said on the PowerPoint. Kinesthetic learners were able to see the
hand motions and follow along as well. The experiment worked well with kinesthetic, visual, and
auditory learners because they were able to conduct a hands-on experiment, watch the hot water and ice
cubes mix, and then share their findings with their peers. The lesson was engaging the entire time and
the students were always doing some sort of activity or taking notes.

The classmate peer review submissions were similar to how well I believe I did when presenting the
lesson. Marina and I put in a lot of time coming up with our lesson, putting it together, and organizing
the materials. We made sure that all of our materials were ready to go so our lesson would run smoothly
when we presented. It was also helpful to hear that our classmates understood that the experiment did
not go as planned but thought it was smart to show a video of how the experiment was supposed to play

out. If I delivered the lesson again I would definitely test the experiment beforehand. We never practiced
it, so that is why it did not go as planned. We forgot to put the hot water in a small cup and drop in
slowly into the container; which would have made the hot water float on the surface. In addition, we
needed larger containers because the cold and hot water mixed too easily in the smaller one. This is
what I would do for next time. From doing this lesson I have realized that to have an effective science
lesson I need to make sure I incorporate the 6Es. This method truly gets students engaged and become
active learners. If students are just being lectured to during science then they will not like the subject.
By having the students be involved in the learning and exploration then they will understand the content
and become better learners in all subjects.
