Packing / What to Bring

We have space under the bus for our gear. Remember: We will only be gone two nights. Make sure to
include a sleeping bag and pillow because we will be sleeping on the floor at the Hastings United Methodist
church.
Also, a completed Code of Conduct form and Medical form must also be on file with Grace. You cannot go
on the trip if we do not have these essential forms.

Packing List
List of all medications you take and a note from parents about medicines
Sleeping bag & pillow
Air mattress or cot (if you have/need one)
A water bottle
Towel & toiletries (We will not have access to showers, but sinks can work wonders)
Warm clothing (heavy socks, gloves/mittens, ski pants, hat/headband, etc.- bring extras to change
and dry wet ones)
Sunblock
Money for six on-your-own meals (suggested amount $60)
Money for ski or snowboard and helmet rental ($68 for 2 days) * * * Note: MUST HAVE AN ID
CARD TO RENT SNOWBOARDS * * *
Optional Items
Ski Goggles (recommended)
Reading materials, music, journal, cards, games, etc.
Snack foods (You are responsible for storage)
Sack dinner for Friday night (or bring money for fast food at our stop at the Clear Lake exit)
Back pack to bring on the bus for those items you might need on the bus ride
Food
On Friday evening, we will stop for fast food, but you may bring a sack dinner to save money. We will eat
breakfast at Perkins on Saturday & Sunday. Please remember that it is polite to leave a tip at this
restaurant. (We have a long-standing friendship with the waitresses at this Perkins. They do their very best
to get our large group fed promptly, which helps us get to the slopes sooner. The best way to show our
appreciation for their quick and friendly service is with a 15%-20% tip!!!) Saturday and Sunday lunches will
be at the ski chalet. Expect to spend $6-$8 for a burger and fries. You may also want to bring extra money
for drinks throughout the day. Saturday evening we will have a meal lovingly prepared by the chaperones
(and youth volunteers???). This meal does not cost you anything. Please do not order any food for
delivery Saturday night. Sunday evening we will stop at a fast food restaurant on our way back to Des
Moines.
Time to Ski
Youth who have not skied before must take lessons with a ski instructor at Afton Alps. Arden Borgen is
Graces resident ski instructor as well. He and several chaperones will continue to tutor all beginning skiers
(or those wanting advice). We have chaperones attending who will keep an eye out for the youth on the
slopes and in the chalet. Everyone skis with a buddy. No one skis alone. All youth are required to check
in at regular intervals (every couple of hours) with the chaperones in the chalet.

Expectations
Please remember that you are representing not only Grace United Methodist Church, but also a group of
Christian youth and most of all yourself. It is hoped that all participants at this event will value and treat
each other with respect and dignity as children of God. All participants are expected to:
- Regard others as sisters and brothers in Christ
- Be sensitive to hurtful language, behavior and attitudes; do not practice them!
- Prohibit the presence of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and other controlled substances
- Respect the privacy and property of others
- Dress appropriately at all times, especially during our overnight at Hastings
- Arrive promptly and participate fully in the weekends events
Sunday Night Arrival Time (Important Parent Info) Sunday evening we should return to the Grace parking lot around 8:30 PM, but in order to avoid parentless
youth or long waits in the parking lot for parents coming to pick up their youth, we will communicate with all
families concerning our time of arrival. When we are one hour outside of Des Moines, we will contact
everyone or youth with cell phones will contact their parents.
