Experiment - 4

AIM: Verify law of resistance in series and parallel.

Equipment Needed:
1.
2.
3.
4.

NV6041 kit
Different Resistors
Power Supply
Multimeter

Procedure:
1. Connect the -ve terminal of DC Supply to I and +ve terminal to J terminal of the bridge.
2. Connect Galvanometers +ve and -ve terminals to M and N terminals respectively.
3. Connect K & L terminals of variable resistance to E & G (R3) terminals of bridge.
4. Take two resistances of 100 as r1 and r2 and check with multimeter.
5. Connect the resistances either in series or in parallel combination with the terminals H & F
(Rx).
Note: Set all rotaries at 0 before starting the experiment.
6. Then set resistances R1 and R2 at 10.
7. Keep the key K1 in 'Off' position.
8. Switch 'On' the trainer.
9. Switch 'On' the key K1 and observe the deflection on galvanometer.
10. Then adjust the value of R3 in step of .1, 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10K as per the
requirement beginning from zero, till the null point is not obtained in the galvanometer. For R3,
resistance of x.1, x1, x10, x100, x1000, x10K provided.
For example, suppose galvanometer shows deflection in left direction at 1000 and at 2000 in
right direction then the null point lies between these two resistances then adjusting resistances of
100, 10, 1 and . 1, to get the null point. Then add the value of all resistances which you
have selected, this will give R3.
11. Note the value of R3 in the given Observation table.
12. Repeat the same procedure for 1/10 ratio by taking out R1 = 10 and R2 = 100 and adjust
the resistance R3, till the null point is not obtained. If the null point is not obtained then repeat
the same step no. 10. Now note the value of R3 in the given Observation table.
13. Repeat the procedure for 1/100 ratio by taking out R1 = 10 and R2 = 1000.

14. Resistance Rx of the combination of resistances either in series or in parallel can be

determined by using Wheatstone Bridge relation:
R1/R2 = R3/Rx
Where R1 & R2 are the resistances of arm AB and BC respectively, R3 is variable resistance at
which point we determining null point.
15. Tabulate all the readings of Rx in the given Observation table.
Observation Table:

16. Take the mean of Rx.

17. For the verification of resistances in series Rx = r1+r2 =...........
Where r1 and r2 are the actual value of resistances.
18. Similarly for the verification of resistances in parallel
1/Rx = 1/r1 +1/r2
1/Rx = (r1+r2) / r1r2
Rx = r1r2 / (r1+r2) =..............
Here the actual value and experimental value in any combination will be same.
