Why immigration is good for the U.S.

Immigration in the U.S. is a great influence to the economy of the United States and
many politicians want to take advantage of this situation in the best way possible. An article
written by John Engler on the Washington Times explains a variety of reasons of how Immigrants
help improve our economy. This source relates to my topic in a way to support Immigrant
residence in the states. This article also supports my topic by providing evidence that states why
immigrants should stay in our country.
In the Introduction of the article written by John Engler he is directing his words to every
American and Politician regardless of their beliefs. In a sentence John states If one thing unites
almost everyone in the United States, no matter their political views, it is this.

Here he is

clearly trying to direct his word to every citizen living in the U.S. John wants his voice to be
heard even if their political views are different from his own. Then he proceeds by saying that
our leaders fail to open their eyes to issues happening in our country. This means that John is
trying to make a change by convincing his audience why they should support Immigration
reform.
On the website there is only one photo of John Engler giving what seems as a speech. In
this image his facial expression seems to be honest and direct, this sends a message to the
audience reading the article, it is as if he is trying to say to look at him straight in the eyes
because what he is about to say is true and evident.
John Engler does utilize ethos in this news article. Credibility is a major part of making
the audience listen to the author, and what really makes John Engler credible? First, this article is
posted on the Washington Times which is a highly ranked newspaper around the U.S. Secondly,
John himself is a politician who of course is highly educated and has major knowledge on the
topic being spoken about. Engler is also President of the Business Roundtable which is an

association of CEOs of leading U.S. companies. Another thing that helps his credibility is his
use of statistics as in a variety of occasions he gives the audience numbers to prove how working
immigrants would help improve our economy over the next twenty years.
Another thing that makes this article credible is that it was published on the Washington
Times and the article has the name of the author included along with the date it was published. It
is well written and professional with dark letters that are easy to read and understand.
John uses pathos in a very discreet way in which his words are not straight forward but
eventually get to the cause. In other words John is describing how Americas history has come to
be by immigration. This country got to where it is because of Immigrants coming in and making
improvements that changed the way people live and how the economy has flourished because of
the new jobs these immigrants have created in the past, and until this day this is still the case. He
also states that this country should be open to letting Immigrants come in, and let them
contribute with their talents and skills, in order to make our economy flourish. As John stated in
fact there is great competition around the world to prove a persons talent and America cannot
afford to lose these opportunities that come their way. John leaves a strong message on the
audience when he states that in the past immigrants have created companies that eventually grow
massively and eventually turns their American dreams into American jobs. This is a very strong
message to Americans as he tries to open everyones eyes to look ahead into the future and to see
what this country can become.
John does use logos on his article throughout the length of the article. Logical reasoning
used in this website can be seen on almost every paragraph in which the author uses numbers and
statistics to back up his argument on the subject, in an argument being made John states that over
20 years federal deficits would decrease by $1.2 trillion. This statistic is being used as a way to

make people realize how positive it could turn out to be if we open our arms to those people who
are trying to make a change in their lives. This message leaves the reader thinking about the
future of this country and how great things can turn out to be in 20 years from now. Even though
it may be difficult to find a lot of logos on this website there is still some that can be identified as
he explains every situation he talks about with great deal of how the economy can be impacted in
the long run.
Even though many people quickly read these articles from the newspaper it is important
to make a close observation on the message being sent to us. On this assignment I described how
ethos, logos, and pathos were utilized on this article in a very specific way in which I explained
how the authors words took an effect on the emotions of the reader to make sure that as a
society we make an important change for our country.
