Withtheriseoftheinternetandpopularmediasitesasasourceofinformation,visual
culturehasbecomeamaincomponentofarteducation.Thebigideaofvisualculturehastaken
onmany.Artistsarenowusingtheirartworkstoconveyanideaorbringlighttoasubjectthat
mayoftenbedeemedasunimportantorunrelated.Studentsinschooltodayhavetrouble
connectingtothesebigissuesbecausetheyhavebecomeaccustomedtovisualpleasing.
Becausestudentsaresoinvolvedinvisualmedia,includingmagazines,billboards,shopping
malls,andamusementparks,andbecausetheimagesprojectedfortheirconsumptioncanbeso
influential,arteducatorshavehaverecognizedaresponsibilitytoeducatestudentsregardingthe
contemporaryvisualworldinwhichtheylive(Hurwitz&Day2007,p.282).Seeingthisissue,
artistsarenowusingmediaasawaytogettheattentionofstudents.
AsateacherIfeelthatitisimportanttobeawareofwhatstudentsareinterestedinand
applyittomyteaching.Withtheideaofvisualcultureinmind,Iwouldinspiremystudentsby
showingthemsomeexamplesofsomepopularartworksthathighlightmajorsubjects.Asthe
teacherIwouldhavemystudentspickoutsomeoftheirfavoriteartworksandthenrecreateitin
theirownways.Sincevisualculturehasmanydifferentaspectsitwouldallowstudentsmore
flexibilitytocreatewhatevertheywouldlike.
