Theconceptofvulnerabilityandempathycanbeaseriousorsensitivetopicdepending
onhoweachstudentemotionallyconnectsandrespondstotheideas.Withtheunderstanding
thateachstudentisdifferent,itisimportanttoapproachthediscussionwithcare.Accordingto
Eldridge,ateachershouldmaketheirclassroomintoacommunitywherethestudentscanfeel
safeandsecureandbeabletosharetheirthoughtsandideas(Eldridge,2012).Inorderto
properlydiscussthetopicsyouasateachermustbekindandcaringwhenhearingtheopinions
andsometimespersonalexperiencesfromstudents.Eldridgestatedthat,Genuinecaring
communitiesarealsoplaceswherethereisacollaborativespirit,whereallstakeholdersfeela
senseofbelonging,wherethereisconnectionandtrustbetweenstudentsandteachers,andwhere
studentsseeadultsactingincaringwaystowardeachother.Here,thereisgenuinerespectfor
studentsandtheirfamilies(Eldridge,2012,p.4).
Whenapproachingtheideasofvulnerabilityandempathy,Ifeelasateacher,youshould
beginbygivingthedefinitionsofbothwordsandthenallowstudentstotakesometimetoreflect
onmemoriesandexperiencesthatconnecttotheseideas.Afterthat,Iwouldaskthestudentsif
theywouldliketosharewhattheyrecall.Again,thiscansometimesbeasensitivesubjectandit
isimportanttorememberthatnotallstudentsmaytakepartinsharing.Themainfocusofthis
lectureistounderstandthemeaningofvulnerabilityandempathyandbeabletoapplyitto
previouseventsintheirlife.
