Whenintroducingtheideaofidentity,itisimportantthatasateacher,youshould
emphasizetheimportanceofindividualityandexplorethedifferentwaysthatstudentscan
expressthemselves,whetheritbethroughstudiosortechnology.Anotherimportantconceptof
identityistheconnectionandinteresttotheartwork.AccordingtoSydneyWalker(2001),
becomingpersonallyconnectedtoabigideaishighlyimportantforartmakingotherwise,
otherwiseartmakingcanbecomemerelyanexerciseinproblemsolving(p.2).Onegreatwayto
approachtheideaofidentitytomakequestionsabouttheartwork.Closelyrelatedtoand
derivedfromtheessentialquestionsareartquestions,aboutthebigidea,whichhelpclarifythe
bigidea,andtheartworksarerelated(Walker,2001p.7).
Withtheunderstandingofhowimportantitistohavemystudentsconnecttotheir
artworkI,astheirteacher,wouldincorporatestudiosasthemainpartoftheclass.Studiosallow
studentstocreateandimaginewhatevertheylike.Duringastudio,Iwouldhavemyartstudents
thinkofanitemfromhomethattheyfeelbestrepresentsthem.Theirnextassignmentwould
thenbetowritedownthereasonswhytheylikethisitemandinwhatwaydotheyconnecttothis
item.ThenIwouldhavethestudentsdiscusswhythisitemrepresentsthem.Asateacherwe
wantstudentstobecreativeandbringouttheirindividualityintheartthattheymake.
