Unit Paper 5: Structures & Systems

In the article Teaching meaning in Artmaking by Sydney R. Walker (2001), the

author states in chapter seven the strong similarities in the artists artwork practices

although the intend in their work is different. As a teacher, it is important to promote art

making as inquiry through attitude and practices. Students should be encouraged to ask

questions, to take risk and to experiment the artmaking so each student can create a

unique intend in each structure in an artmaking problem. In the article A whole new

mind: Why right-brainers will rule the future by Pink, D (2006), the author states the

ability to link unconnected elements to create something original and new which is

known to be the symphony process. Pink, D (2006) states the importance of seeing the

big picture and to combine the relationships.

In the studio chance operations, it gave me the opportunity to explore and to take

risk while being creative. However, it was challenging because we had to create a unique

intend while still following the instructions given. In the studio Co-Curated Installations,

the concept of having theme and creating a mini art studio with provided material, has so

far been a great experience because it allows me to be creative. As a teacher, I would

definitely do this with students because it allows them to follow direction while still

having the opportunity to create a unique intend in the structure. I feel like its a great

way to challenge students to have similarities and also unique creativity in their

artmaking.
