STADIUM GEORGIOS KARAISKAKIS

1. THE FIRST YEARS 1895 - 2003

The stadium was build in 1895 by the H.O.C. as velodrome in order to

accommodate the Cycling events of the Athens 1896 Olympic Games

In the 1920s it started hosting football matches

The stadium was renovated in the 1960s and named Georgios Karaiskakis
as honor to the national hero that lost his life during the 1821 liberation war

It was used as the home ground of Olympiacos FC, Ethnikos Piraeus and
hosted many matches of the Hellenic National Football Team

At international level the stadium also hosted:

- The European track & field Championships in 1969 and
- The European Cup Winners Cup Final between Real Madrid and Chelsea

Eventually in 2003 the stadium was found inappropriate for the conduction of
any sport activities and its operation was terminated .

2. THE NEW ERA

Further to several discussions, in April 2003 the usage of the stadium was
passed to Olympiacos FC under the obligation to construct and deliver to the
H.O.C. a brand new football arena that would accommodate football matches

for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

It was a Build, Operate and Transfer project according to which Olympiacos FC

under specific terms, would operate the venue for the following 49 years
before handling it back to the H.O.C.

The construction of the stadium was assigned to J&P AVAX, constructive

company which had a great experience in sport facilities and massive
participation in infrastructure projects for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games

After a construction process that lasted 16 months the completely refurbished

stadium opened its doors in August 2004 so as to host sport events for the
Olympic Games for the second time in its history.

Today the stadium hosts all home matches of Olympiacos FC and the National
