Radioactive

Uranium is a radioactive .Radioactive is a property of

some atoms that are so unstable that they break up, all
by themselves. They fire out particles or rays. When
they do this, its called Radioactive Decay.
And theres the problem- Because radioactive
substances can cause sickness, burns, cancer and
even death.
Even though its dangerous, radioactivity can be
useful too. For Ex: without it, you might not be
able to turn your light on.
Nuclear power stations use radioactivity to
generate electricity for millions of people.
Gamma rays are used like high-powered x- rays to
look for cracks in metal parts.
In medical, radiotherapy uses radiation to kill
cancer cells.
Smoke detectors contain a radioactive element
called Americum.
In paper-making,, radioactivity is used to make
sure that the paper is the right thickness.
Carbon dating is used to find out how old once
living objects ( wood , bone, buildings etc) is by
measuring the amount of carbon-14 ( a
radioisotope) it contains.
Radioactive substances give out three types of
radiation : Alpha, Beta and Gamma Radiation.
