Dear Families,
This month our class will be learning about Earth Day and ways we
can protect and save the Earth. We will be discussing and implementing
ways to be greener at school and I would like to extend the project into your
home. It is very important that the students apply what they are learning in
places outside of the classroom. Thank you in advance for your cooperation
throughout this unit.
The first at home assignment is called Whats in your garbage
can? Please assist your child in recording the types of items you throw out
and the quantity of each. I have attached a recording sheet listing examples
of types of items. Have your child estimate how much of each item you
throw out. Then your child will fill out an estimated bar graph to show
which items were the greatest and least. We will be going over the directions
for this activity in class so the student comes to you prepared to do the
assignment. Please send the finished assignment back with your child on
4/5/16 so we can make a whole group bar graph and discuss the items each
students family throws out.

Fill in the graph so that it shows the proportion of what is in your garbage can. You are NOT counting individual
items, just guessing an approximation. The longest bar will be the garbage you have the most of, the shortest bar will
be the one you have the least of. If you dont have any of that type of garbage then there will be no bar. Write down
what the other garbage is if you have other garbage in your can, besides whats listed.
