Field Notes 1
I went on my first home engagement on Friday, October 16 at 1 pm,
with Alzira as my faculty companion.
I came in and was greeted by a little black dog and my student Ari. Her
mom came soon after washing her hands since she was making
chicken for dinner. Ari was playing alone since her younger sister Eva
who is 18 months, was taking her nap. We sat at the table and began
our discussion. Their house is located in a quaint neighborhood near
Reid Park. There is a designated play area for the children filled with
toys and some laundry that needed folding. They have a large back
yard with lots of space for the children to play; the yard also has a play
structure with swings. Bear, their 5-year-old dog is lively yet as Carrie
puts it sometimes an idiot. The children and the adults dearly love
him.
Household History
Carrie and her husband used to live in Greensboro, North
Carolina until jobs brought them to Tucson. Aris maternal grandparents
live in Tucson, she was actually the reason why they moved to Tucson,
and prior to moving they lived in Florida. When Ari was born, her Nana
and Papa came to Tucson to be with her. Carrie is an only child and was
never able to meet her grandfather, which is why it is so important to
her that Ari and her sister to get to know and spend time with their
grandparents. Unfortunately, Drews parents or siblings are not in the
picture. His family has not been proactive in trying to build
relationships with Ari and Eva so Carrie and Drew are not forcing it. Its
more important to them that the girls know there are people who love
them like Nana and Papa rather than to know that other family exists
and just refuse to make contact. Carries dad, Papa, used to be a
farmer and now grows a vegetable farm in his backyard with the help
of the girls.
I am glad that the parents have decided to not force relationships
with people who dont want them. Its so important for children to know
their families but at the same time it is much better fro them to be
exposed to those who really want to be part of their lives. The funds of
knowledge suffer a little but it allows the children to have a very
specific set of funds of knowledge and ensure that they know it very
well.
Labor History, Household Activities

Carrie is a retired Electrical Engineer from Texas Instruments. She

retired early this year to be able to concentrate on being a mom and
spend time with her children. Drew works as a mining engineer here in
Tucson. As I mentioned previously, Papa was a farmer before
retirement. Drew volunteers at Second Street doing Parent workdays
and Ari is very proud. Living so close to Reid Park, the family goes on
daily walks around the park. Sometimes Carrie takes Eva while Ari is in
school. Ali has a very full schedule with extra curricular activities daily.
Ali does gymnastics, dance, swimming and tennis every week. She also
loves Costco and asks to go there at least once per week.
Having both parents as engineers, Ari has learned to pay
attention to detail. I see in her work in the classroom that she takes
special care to organize things or stay within the lines. Ali loves to play
outside at school, which is not surprising due to her very active week.
She also loves to share her skills with her peers, teaching them how to
dance or share stories about the grocery store. All these activities
contribute to Alis funds of knowledge. She is also so gentle with Eva
and translates to her being gentle and caring with her peers.
Parent Goals and Ideals
For Carrie, it is very important that her girls know how to stand
up for themselves in such a male dominated world. She hopes to oneday start a woman based business to bring awareness and practice
what she preaches.
