Lesson Topic: Finding Patterns in a Song

Teaching Objectives: The student will be able to learn and explore melody pattern me-re-do which
includes the skill singing me-re-do. The student will understand that different regions produce different
styles of music. The student will understand and discuss ABA form.
Element focus/Skills: Melody patter me-re-do, singing songs that end in me-re-do
Virginia SOLs

2.2 The student will sing a repertoire of songs alone and with others.
2.5 The student will respond to the music with movement.

Materials:

Teachers Edition: Making Music


Student book: Making Music
Piano
CD Player
CD 4-1

Teaching Procedure:
A. Engage the students with a greeting and then invite students to think of a song that makes them
laugh. Share ideas and discuss.
B. Tell the students that they will be singing a fun folk song about a horse and tell them that the song is
from the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.
C. Tell the students to open their books to page 94 of the Making Music book.

D. Teach the song by sections going through the words, then play the song on the piano and have them
sing along. Teach by rote.
E. Teach the refrain on page 95 and then have the student sing along with the recording.
F. Make sure they understand the me-re-do pattern
G. Group the children in pairs and invite the children to make up movements depicting the actions of a
horse and a farmer.
a. Put two hands straight out in front of you and pretend you are riding a horse.
b. Put your two hands in a shovel like position.
Conclusion: Ask the children what is a pattern. Ask the students what the pattern of the refrain was.
Assessment: Do the students understand the pattern me-re-do and where it occurs? What could be some
changes to make this lesson more effective?
