Article Summary
Music and Art in STEM
In the article entitled, STEAM Power: Music and the Arts as Part of a Comprehensive
Education, Alexandra Eaton explains the importance of the arts as a core subject. She explains
the new STEAM movement and its plan to put the arts back into a principal part in education.
She also describes the benefits that students receive during the learning process as they are
educated with the arts.
According to the article, many school districts today value the arts, but there is a testing
issue that has kept many funding projects distant from them. Organizations such as the Rhode
Island School of Design and the National Association for Music Education have proposed the
idea of STEAM. They simply added art into the STEM. The organizations are striving to have
music along with other arts to be taught as core subjects (16).
The author uses a clever comparison to get support her proposal by comparing
performers to engineers. She explained how the responsibility is an aspect of effective
management for engineers and jazz ensembles. She displayed how the capability to take a
recognized idea and produce something innovative is essential whether youre inventing a new
product or composing a song.
Music education and the other arts provide students with some concepts and skills that
are not offered in their STEM classes. Music and the arts offer complexity of problems without
having to memorize or learn only to be tested. Students feel confident and they are involved with
their peers in music and the arts. Music and the arts have an amazing impact on students

personal development. I am a strong advocate for music education. This article effectively
describes the need for music as a core subject.
