Teaching Procedure:
Introduction: Introduce the lesson by asking the students to share what they have learned in
music class in elementary school or 6th grade.

Pass out a theory review sheet and instruct the students to fill out the sheet and explain to
them that it is not for a grade.

Pass out the Do It! Play Flute Student Book. Instruct the students to turn to page 3 in the
book.

Discuss/explain the proper way to hold the flute and posture.

Pass out staff paper and instruct the students to turn to page 6 in their books.

Instruct the students to draw their first note 4 times on their staff paper. Then the same
with their second note.

Pass out flutes. Then instruct the students to take the flutes out carefully. Take the flute
out piece by piece.

Have the students learn the fingerings and then practice playing D, E-flat, and F

Explain what a repeat sign is. Have the students perform exercise 1-4 on page 6. Have
them speak the words first before they play.

accompaniment
Assessment: The teacher will monitor the students as they develop posture. Are the students
retaining the fingerings for the various notes? Are the students assembling the flute correctly?
