researched topic, and put into writing what one has just learned through good note taking.
In a community such as FootLocker, joining is easy once one fills out an application for
employment, writes down two good references for the manager to contact, shows ability to stand
on feet for long periods of time, has a friendly persona, finds it easy to persuade people to buy as
much as possible, and, lastly, survives the interview. Genre of writing that takes place in this
community includes note keeping for tracking sales of socks, insoles, and hook-ups which are
sales that contain one shoe along with another branded item. During our various meetings, we
explain how to improve sales by practicing techniques toward achieving better hook-up and
persuading people to try on and buy more items. Conventions in this community which involve
having a polite mannerism; being aggressive, yet friendly and welcoming to all customers; going
for the no which means to continue to introduce new product until the customer says no; and
inviting all customers to try something on. Putting these guidelines put in place allow one to
write more as ones sales increase thus more note taking occurs. The main goal of writing in this
community is to keep track of the various sales to use as a reference on how one can improve.
To become a member of the Delta GEMS, one must fill out an application with a
recommendation letter attached to it explaining the various hours of community service one does
and how one excels academically in the classroom. But not only that, one must explain how one
shows strong leadership and survive the interview. The writing taking place in this community
takes for in various reports on community service and fellowship outings. Also, for scholarship
purposes, one may write a few formal papers trying to achieve the scholarship that is offered
through the community. Topics covered during the meetings include planning for upcoming
projects and activities for the month as well as various ideas for improvement of the program.
Simple guidelines are as follows: arrive prompt and on time to all meetings with cell phones off
and direct full attention to the women of Delta Sigma Theta Inc.
If one would like to gain membership into a particular church, one must, first and
foremost, have the same beliefs as the church, take new member classes, and show a strong
desire to enter into heaven. In church, the various forms of writing take place for things such
writing formal papers for scholarship purposes and taking strenuous notes on the sermons spoken
every Sunday. During the sermons, the pastor speaks on things such as how to become a better
Christian, what can be done to become closer to God and develop a better relationship with Him,
and how to achieve heaven as well as become a better person. Proper decorum in the church
include arriving on time, finding seats in pews quietly, directly all attention to the pulpit,
remaining seated during the sermon, and exiting the building giving people hugs and smiles. The
main goal of writing in this community is taking notes on good, sound knowledge to refer to so
one may apply it to their everyday life.
As one may infer, writing plays a role in various communities whether it is minor or
major. Writings, however, take place through various forms depending on goals for the writings
and the formality of the writings. Nevertheless, various guidelines and regulations of various
groups shape which type of writing one may produce. In such unique communities such as the
University, Delta GEMS, FootLocker Inc., and Church, writing is important. Whether the
reasons for the writings is to show a well researched topic, show mastery of the English
language, take notes, report on various activities, apply for different scholarships, writing is
clearly shown to take place in many unique communities.
