Step 1Desired Results
Objectives: The student will analyze a piece of artwork and use critical thinking skills to justify the use of
images the artist chose. The student will learn about Andrew Wyeth, who used specific objects to portray
mood and to depict a particular part of the world.
Analysis of learners: 6-8 middle school students.
Art curriculum standards: Minnesota Academic Standards: 6.1.3.5.1: Compare and contrast the
connections among visual artworks, their purposes and their personal, social, cultural and historical
contexts.

Understanding:
-The student will gain knowledge of depicting a region and what they want to say about it using images
to draw a scene.
-The student will study the painting Christinas World by Andrew Wyeth and gain knowledge of why
and how he used images to tell a story and depict a region of the world.
Performance Criteria:
-The student will use Versal to gain knowledge of Andrew Wyeth and analyze parts of his painting
Christinas World.
-The student will use this knowledge to create their own drawing of their home to say something about
their neighborhood, home, or imagine a place they would like to live.
-Assessment for both will be based on what the student wanted to say about their chosen location and if
they effectively conveyed this.
Step 3Learning Plan
Materials:
-Computer with internet access
-Pencils or colored pencils
-Paper
Time: 4-50 minute classes
Before Class:
-Students will be introduced to Andrew Wyeth and using Versal, will go through a series of components
to test their ability to read into what Wyeth was trying to say and the objects he chose to convey.
Day 1:
-I will lead off class with a discussion on what the students learned through their Versal lesson. 10
minutes
-Have students think about what location they will want to portray using elements from other source

material. They will choose to portray their home, where they would want to live, or an imaginary place
they want to live. 10 minutes
-Students will decide on whether they want to use graphite pencils or colored pencils. 5 minutes
-Students will decide on what objects they will use to convey what they want to say about this location.
10 minutes
-Students can use images from magazines or books to properly portray their idea of their location. 10
minutes
-At the end of class, students will have decided the location and images they will use to portray their
location. 5 minutes
Day 2:
-Students will use the entire 50 minutes to work on their drawing. 50 minutes
Day 3:
-Students will hang their drawings 5 minutes
-As a class, we will discuss each drawing individually with the student and they will discuss their work
and we will critique if they properly conveyed their idea through the images chosen and overall
composition. 40 minutes
-Students will place their artwork in their file folder for assessment by the instructor.
