ASSESSMENT 1: REFINED RESEARCH PROPOSAL (20%)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• ULO1: Plan, and engage in, an in-depth investigation of a chosen topic through application of
appropriate techniques.

ASSIGNMENT TASK
In SRR720 Construction Research Frontiers, each student completed a Research Proposal for how
they would proceed in SRR721 Construction Research Project.

Each student should now review that proposal, amend and refine it as appropriate, and present it, in
the form of a poster, which will provide a summary of key literature, a refined concept map, your
research aims and objectives and a diagram of your research design.

Each student will discuss their research proposal for no more than 3-minutes with their peers in their
seminar group. The discussion should mention your progress to date, challenges/hurdles encountered
and how you will proceed to completion.

ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE
You are presenting only the key points of your research proposal in this poster. You should use as
many visual aids as possible to convey your research design. Try to develop a graphic that shows
how you will undertake your research – both collection and analysis of the information you require.

You may use dot points where appropriate. An A2 poster, combined with your 3-minute presentation,
equates to 2000 words. You should not include 2000 words on your poster!

Be creative and innovative. This is your research and you should be excited about what you are
proposing. Pretend you are explaining it to someone who is not involved in construction management
– tell us only as much as we need to understand what you are doing.

FORMAT OF ASSIGNMENT
The assignment should take the form of an A2 poster. It should include a good mix of text and
visuals.

The poster will be presented in the seminar session during Week 4. You should talk for no more than
3 minutes. It is meant to be a discussion of your ideas and research proposal. Feedback will be
provided by your peers and academics that may improve your proposal and therefore your research.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR CLOUD STUDENTS:

• Each student should submit a Narrated PowerPoint that reflects all the information required in
the assignment task above. You will not be required to attend a presentation in person.
• The Narrated PowerPoint should include a good balance of visual and text contents and must
be no more than 3 minutes.
• Please submit visual and audio content in the same file. Only submit file types that are
accessible with commonly used media players. You must ensure high sound and image
quality before you submit. The narration should be in your own voice.
• You must provide a clear narrative around your research proposal, so that all parts are
considered in an integrated considered way.

• ULO2: Synthesise existing knowledge on your chosen topic and apply critical and
analytical skills to make informed judgements and new discoveries on that topic.
• ULO3: Communicate the outcome of your research investigation, including your
findings and recommendations, professionally and effectively.

ASSIGNMENT TASK

This assessment requires the student to produce a research report that details the research
problem, explores current knowledge as published in recent literature, demonstrates the
importance of the research and outlines the research method for data collection and analysis.
The final report should highlight the research findings as well as provide reasoned and
supported conclusions and recommendation based on the research findings.

FORMAT OF ASSIGNMENT

• Students will provide a written work of no less than 8000 words that may include project
documentation, or other supplementary materials depending on the nature of the
research. Maximum word limit is 10,000.
• This report should be presented as a well formatted and structured report that reflects
professionalism in language, layout, formatting and writing style.
