Task 1

•Describe the key purpose of observation, outlining advantages and

disadvantages of this research approach to collecting data.
Participant method of data collection is used to gather data about people and
processes. Participant observation is considered by researchers as the most common and
simplest method of data collection since it does not entail technical knowledge. Participant
observation method of data collection is a qualitative approach of collecting and analyzing
data under a natural setting. As such, it plays a fundamental role when conducting research
as it enables researchers to observe the manner in which the participants behave in a
natural setting. In simple terms, observation method of data collection refers to a systemic
description of events, behaviors as well as artifacts in a natural setting selected for a given
study. The approach of data collection enables researchers to describe existing situations
through the application of five senses of the phenomenon or situation under study.
There are several advantages of using participant observation method when
collecting data compared to other approaches of data collection. For instance, the approach

m
er as
provides a richly detailed description of a phenomenon under investigation that assists in

co
describing events, behaviors, situations, as understood by the researcher. Also, the

eH w
approach of data collection provides an opportunity to view the participants in events that
are not scheduled. As such, it enhances the quality of data collection, interpretation, and

o.
rs e
also assists in facilitating the design of new research questions or hypothesis.

questionnaires? Discuss the mechanisms that can be used to administer online

questionnaires and outline the advantages and disadvantages that may occur.

• Explain the principles of wording, stating how these are important in

questionnaire design, citing examples not in the book.

• How are multiple methods of data collection and from multiple sources related
to the reliability and validity of the measures?

• "Every data collection method has its own built-in biases. Therefore, resorting
to multi-methods of data collection is only going to compound the biases."
Provide a critique of this statement.
