Coursework Details

Students will be evaluated on the quality of the studio work produced for the class, participation in
discussion/critiques, and written work. All students are expected to be active participants in class sessions and
to develop a methodology for the discussion of the creative work presented in the course. Students without
work ready for critique automatically receive no grade of 0 pts. (F) for coursework: critique/presentation. To
pass this course, students must demonstrate meeting the enumerated course requirements (see bullet points
below). Exceptions for medical or family emergencies that impact work may be considered and will require a
signed form from the Records Office.

● Reading: Students are responsible for all the readings listed in the course schedule and are expected to read them BEFORE coming
to class. This is necessary for completing the Concept Summaries. It will also aid in the comprehension of the material and
participation in class.

● Art Review Blog WordPress, or Vlog Youtube: Students will create their own new media art project and blog/vlog each progress,
and blog their artist statement about theirs. OR the blog/vlog can be based on a review of new media art projects that the
student has seen in a museum/gallery. This coursework should be a critical analysis of a new media visual artist, and a series of
new media art projects. In this project, you must make clear connections between the documents discussed in class and the
artworks examined. You are also expected to do research and read beyond the scope of the texts discussed in class. Each essay
will be assigned a numeric grade on the rubric (see submission page on LMS to review the rubric).

Arts and Design SUBJECT SYLLABUS 3/25/21 update

● Participation / Leading Seminar: Students will lead the discussion for 15-20 minutes in the seminar/colloquium at least 1 time during
the trimester. This means (i) deciding on key ideas or concepts to address, (ii) developing 3-5 discussion questions that you will
share with the class, and (iii) developing a ‘plan’ for discussion. Plans for leading a seminar should be shared with me at least 24
hours before our class, and no later than 6:30 pm on Friday evening.

Participation is an important part of this course and a large component of the class as a whole. Students must be prepared to
discuss the readings and web documents accessible during class so that you may refer to them, as well as a draft of your
blogs/vlogs and your reading notes.

● Individual Studio Work & Studio Critique Seminar: Because the initial critiques will involve less work, we will begin with
presentations of ideas and croquis. For later critiques, work(s) is to be formally installed in a space around the
home/studio/office, documented, and presented in a professional manner.
CRITIQUE PROTOCOLS:
1. Slides must be labeled with the artist name, title (if applicable), medium, and dimensions, and uploaded on the online
dropbox determined by the instructor. Work is to be uploaded as instructed
2. Students will introduce themselves by presenting a written statement and their single best work (in their opinion). In
addition, each student is required to present work for best critique at least two times during the Trimester.
3. Presenting students should prepare questions for a response. If the student has readings for the class to consider then
they should be distributed in advance of the critique.
4. All critique sessions are done via Google Meet organized by the instructor and scheduled on determined class hours.

Learning Management System:

This course uses Schoology as the primary Learning Management System and uses Google Classroom as an additional class resource
portal. It is important that you log in at least twice a week to Schoology. Students are responsible for the material posted there.
Announcements, updates, information for each week, and course materials on this site will be posted there. Students must make the habit to
check their PWU Gmail regularly to receive course announcements/updates from BSID 304 Google Calendar and Google Chat.

Special Needs: Students who have a Learning Disability, even those who do not plan to seek accommodations, are strongly encouraged to
register with the PWU SFAD Counseling Services (mmchozas@pwu.edu.ph). This will ensure that you have access to all of the services and
accommodations that are available. For more information about these services, please contact the Program Coordinator
(monoza@pwu.edu.ph). You can email her to set up an appointment. She is available for individual meetings with students and can direct both
faculty and students to the resources that suit their needs.

POLICIES

Course of Conduct

Plagiarism is not allowed in any academic environment. Academic integrity is essential to a positive learning and teaching environment. All
students enrolled in the PWU SFAD courses are expected to complete coursework responsibilities with fairness and honesty. The coursework
you submit must be authored/created by you. The SFAD Graduate Program defines scholastic dishonesty as the failure to create original work to
seek unfair advantage over others or misrepresent someone else’s work as their own. Other forms of scholastic dishonesty are as follows:
Submission of false records of academic achievement; recycling of coursework made from previous/other classes; cheating on assignments or
examinations; plagiarizing; altering, forging, or misusing a College academic record, taking, acquiring or using test materials without faculty
permission; acting alone or in cooperation with another to falsify records or to obtain grades, honors, awards, or professional endorsement in a
dishonest manner. Within this course, when a student acts and submits coursework with scholastic dishonesty will result in disciplinary action: a
penalty of 0 credit on coursework, a final “F” grade for the course; and/or possible termination of M.A. candidacy if the student underperforms
due scholastic dishonesty/academic. Thus, if you have any questions regarding the expectations for a specific assignment or exam, please ask.

Attendance in classes is mandatory. There are no officially excused absences. Two tardiness will result in one absence. Four (4) absences will
result in a final grade of 5.00 (F) thus, the course has to be repeated. Students may be required to attend selected webinars outside of scheduled
class time. Contact the instructor via email in advance if the student will miss an online session but the student must catch up by making
arrangements with a classmate to get a copy of notes, or viewing the recorded session at the Google Classroom LMS (if available).

Copyright Policies refer to Student Manual https://drive.google.com/drive/u/4/my-drive

Reproducing quotes and/or images of artwork found in books, journals, periodicals, or the Internet is strictly prohibited and subject to
international copyright laws. Students submitting reproductions should cite appropriate sources using The Chicago Manual Style (specifically

The readings authored by scholars are the intellectual property of the individual scholars. These materials and/or original works are provided
to the
students specifically for the objectives of this graduate course. Therefore, the reproduction (i.e., photocopying, scanning, photographing,

April 2014) and beyond the term without the explicit and written consent and/or authorization of the respective authors are strictly prohibited
and violate international copyright laws. Copyright infringement constitutes academic misconduct and, thus, will be addressed per university
protocols, as well as through other legal channels available in (http://www.ipophil.gov.ph/index.php) and outside the Philippines.
