For this assignment, it was required that I observe two discourse communities and

collect data to later analyze and compare how they communicate to reach their goal.
Before even starting my observation I had select the community based on the six
characteristics that define what a discourse community is. The two communities that I
chose to observe was a tennis team and the WIN Academy. For me it was very interesting
to take a step back and really see how the discourse community works together to reach
their common goal.
I found this assignment very interesting and I enjoyed the
purpose behind it. The purpose was to break apart two discourse
communities and see how each piece works with each other so the
discourse could reach their common goal. I personally feel that I
accomplished the purpose. I gave reader a list of lexis used in the
community. I feel that by doing this it shows readers how exclusive the
discourse community is and the many terms that are used.
When writing my discourse I feel that my writing process helped.
I took notes while observing each discourse community and I feel that
this made it easier for me to analyze. Between my drafts I made my
purpose for both discourse communities clearer. The articles that I read
before starting my observation really helped me understand the
meaning of a discourse community. I used both Tony Mirabelli and John
Swales article in my essay. I feel that both authors made an effective point in their article
that I agree with. John Swales six characteristics helped me select my communities and
Tony Mirabellis article introduced the idea of multiliteracy.

After observing both discourse communities I learned how each community has
their own common goals. I also learned how effective communication is an important
component when reaching that common goal.
