To make the dial plate, cut out a cardboard circle measuring 4 in radius and
another circle to mark the numbers of the clock measuring 6 in radius. Paint the dial
plate with a picture of the sun in the centre using Rangeela Tempera Colours -
Yellow, Orange, Sky Blue made by mixing Blue and White and Black, respectively.
Leave it to dry.
Stick a thick straw at the centre of the sun using Fevicol MR. Mark the hour lines on
the dial plate using Rangeela Tempera Colour - Black.
Keep your sundial out on the terrace or ground and observe the shadows made by
the straw (Gnomon) falling on the dial.
The shadows of the different times can give you tentative timings, which later can
be marked by you by referring to the clock. The position of the shadows will change
according to the seasons.
FUN FACTS
The earliest known sundial was made by ancient Egyptians in about 3500 BC. The
sundial was a stick or a pillar that cast a shadow on the ground. Clocks replaced the
sundials in the 1300s.
