Leeds Street Angels: A Brief Overview

The Leeds Street Angels began in January 2012. It is a Christian initiative that seeks
to show the love of God to those who have or may become vulnerable during the
night life of Leeds.
We provide care and compassion in the night-life of Leeds and are on patrol every
Friday and two Saturday nights each month in Leeds city centre from 10.30pm
3am. We offer flip flop sandals to protect bare feet from broken glass or other hazards; bottled water to prevent dehydration; Space/Foil blankets to prevent hypothermia; hair bobbles to tie hair back when young people are vomiting and nonalcoholic wipes and tissues. We provide our volunteers with Hi-Visibility jackets
with the Street Angels logo printed on the front and back and back packs for carrying resources, note books, first aid kits and business cards to give out. We also hand
out Spikeys to prevent bottled drinks from being spiked.
We are listening ears and helping hands providing information and directions. We
assist those who are vulnerable, distressed, lost, unwell or confused.
In September 2014 we were able to employ our new coordinator to maintain our resources and to develop our service.

Review of the Year:

Accomplishments
1. Over 200 people helped during their night out in Leeds
Our patrol teams have significantly helped more than 200 people during their patrols this year. The help given includes administering first aid; calling ambulances;
sitting and talking to individuals and calling friends or family for individuals unable
to look after themselves. Our presence on the streets and engagement has meant we
have helped keep these people safe. We have alerted CCTV and the police to fights or
vulnerable people where we have been unable to personally intervene, helping to reduce anti-social behaviour. We have acted as a support to friends of those who have
been taken to hospital or have been arrested, often talking with them to calm them
down, help them understand what is happening and plan what to do. In addition to
this we have also helped many more people by providing bottled water, flip flops,
giving directions or local information and calling taxis.
2. Over 1800 bottles/glass items removed from the streets
Our patrol teams removed approximately 1,812 glass items from the streets, reducing the potential for these to be used as weapons, to threaten others or for self harming.
3. The addition of a second Saturday night patrol
Since September 2014, 40+ people have visited the project and joined us for a night
on patrol and 10 people have become regular volunteers. With growing numbers of
volunteers and a trial of Saturday patrols in June we decided to add an additional
Saturday night to our monthly patrols, which began in October 2015. This helps us
progress to our goal of having a patrol every Friday and Saturday night.
4. 770+ volunteer hours.
Over the course of the year the Leeds Street Angels have delivered more than 770
volunteer hours of patrol between 10.30pm-3am on Friday and Saturday nights in
Leeds city centre!
5. Further training through partnership working.
We have partnered with a number of agencies and groups in Leeds to raise awareness of the project and benefited from further training to develop a more informed
and equipped service. For example we arranged to receive River Safety and Throw
Line Training from West Yorkshire Fire Service, and we now carry a throw line with
us on patrol. By continuing to develop our relationship with West Yorkshire Police
and receive training sessions from them on topics such as Legal Highs and CSI we
are able to better support them during our patrols.

Stories from Patrol

Taken from the reports made by our volunteers at the end of a patrol night.
A woman approached us in a lot of pain with glass in her foot - we helped her
get to the ambulance...
We helped two girls who had fallen. One had knocked a tooth out and was
very upset and we waited with her until her mum came to pick her up. We
waited with the other girl until the paramedic arrived and took over.
One girl whod lost her friend - we spent a long time waiting for her to charge
her phone in a bar (we sorted that) and she was very worried - we spoke to the
police who took details and we took her to the Queens Hotel where her sister
picked her up, then we got a call and her friend had made it home! Good news
Police called us to Briggate to attend to K. who was suffering from alcohol, unable to move her legs; started to shake/fit and at this point the police called the
ambulance. Ambulance came quickly and took her to hospital. Police remained
the whole time; a doctor who was passing by was also on hand.
Helped girl who'd had an argument with her boyfriend and was on her own.
She wasn't from Leeds so didn't know her way around. We stayed with her until they found each other.
We helped A. who was on a park bench very drunk and not speaking - the
CMU (Community Medical Unit) pointed him out to us and we worked with
ambulance and police to get him sorted - after an hour or so he sobered up and
some friends found him and took him home.

Priorities for the year ahead

We have funding for the current year September 2015- August 2016 which enables
us to continue to employ our coordinator, maintain our resources and develop the
project. Our priorities for this year are:
Recruitment of volunteers: In the last year we gained 10 new volunteers. We
would like to continue to increase our volunteer numbers so that we can have a
larger presence in the city centre and a bigger impact, helping more people to stay
safe and helping to prevent crime.
Increased number of patrols: We would like to reach our goal of having a patrol every Friday and Saturday night in Leeds
Fund Raising: Our current funding will come to an end in September 2016. This
year a priority is to secure funding for the project to continue after this time.
Prevention work: To carry out prevention work, through education and awareness.
Prayer: To establish an ongoing prayer support for the project.
