EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

PROCEDURES

The school maintains current:


- Emergency Management Procedures
- Critical Incident Plans
- Occupational Health and Safety Procedures Hazard Risk Management
which describes how the school will respond during an emergency to ensure
ongoing safety of staff, students and visitors.
If an emergency situation occurs within the school, eg. fire, toxic chemical spills,
notify the front office immediately (Phone 500). The Principal or Assistant Principals
will be informed and a decision will be made.
The emergency management plans have been developed in consultation with staff
and are be prominently displayed in all areas of the school.
Adequate counselling and trauma support forms part of the Critical Incident Plans.
Two emergency evacuation and two lockdown drills involving local emergency
services (if available) will occur each year when students are in class and in
grounds.
All emergency or criminal activity in which the safety or well-being of staff or
students is at risk, or where there is a threat to property, will be reported
immediately to the Police.
Incidents which occur during camps, excursions or outdoor adventure activities,
which occur during travel to or from school, involve the media, or issues for potential
negligence or legal liability must be reported to the Principal

1. EXIT via the assigned routes to Odd Street or Main Yard.


2. Go to DESIGNATED area at Evacuation Assembly Point.
3. LINE UP in Tutor Groups and STAY with Tutor Group Teachers.
4. Tutor Group Teachers to MARK the roll and return to Student Coordinators.
5. LISTEN to your teacher.
6. WAIT for an all clear to return to school buildings.
WHEN STUDENTS IN CLASSROOM:

A repeating ring from the school bell requires immediate and orderly evacuation of building
In each room, there are instructions indicating the path the class will follow to the Evacuation
Assembly Point.
In an orderly and controlled manner, the class is to be escorted to this point. DO NOT pack
books away. You are to leave immediately leaving bags and books behind.
Doors are to be closed but not locked.
When the students have arrived at the Evacuation Assembly Point, they are to assemble
alphabetical order in Tutor Groups according to the markings on the asphalt.

WHEN STUDENTS IN GROUNDS:

A repeating ring from the school bell requires immediate and orderly evacuation of the
school. Students are to leave their bags and books behind.
Students, directed by staff, are to exit any building in which they may be located via the
nearest exit. They are not to re-enter or go beneath any building on their way to the
Evacuation Assembly Point.
Doors are to be closed but not locked.
Students are to make their way directly to the Evacuation Assembly Point-Odd St Basketball
Courts.
When the students have arrived at the Evacuation Assembly Point, they are to assemble
alphabetical order in Tutor Groups according to the markings on the asphalt

LOCKDOWN
BUILDING LOCKDOWN Repeating Alternate Bell Ringing
1. Students are to get down against an inside wall DOWN ON THE FLOOR.
2. Teacher to LOCK DOOR and TURN OUT THE LIGHTS.
3. Teacher will LOCK THE WINDOWS and CLOSE ANY CURTAINS.
4. Stay on the floor SILENTLY.
5. STAY CALM.
6. DO NOT USE THE PHONE.
7. LISTEN to your teacher.
8. WAIT for an all clear.
WHEN STUDENTS IN CLASSROOM:
Close and lock the door and windows and draw the curtains if fitted.
If room has a store room, students are to move into store room; otherwise students
are to sit under the window closest to the exit door.
Students are to remain silent and follow the teachers instructions.
No teacher or student is to leave the classroom for whatever reason until the all clear is
given.
WHEN STUDENTS IN GROUNDS:
Main Yard Site

Students in Main Yard go to B, E and G block stairwells or to curved stairwell


near canteen and move upstairs.
Staff from common room to open and relock BU and CU rooms for students to go
into.
Students to follow directions of teachers.
Teachers to direct students to Theatrette and classrooms and assume lockdown
position.
Teachers to lock stairwell door and corridor doors behind students wherever
possible

Marcellin Site

Students in Marcellin area are to move to Marcellin Library building, under the
direction of the teachers on duty and assume lockdown positions.

The Principal or Assistant Principal will announce via the loudspeaker system when it is
safe.
The Critical Incident Plan may then need to come into effect.

DAM BURST/FLOOD PROCEDURES:

Principal or delegate to notify bus company of need for buses.
Students to pack bags
All windows and doors secured
In an orderly and controlled manner, the class is to be escorted to Odd Street.
The Principal is to remain near the phone while necessary.
When the students have arrived at Odd Street, they are to assemble in Tutor
Groups:
o Years 7/8: far court (closest to cricket nets)
o Years 9/10: near court
All staff collect personal belongings and go to evacuation area with allocated Year
Group.
The Student Services Person will bring over a folder with the following information
- 4 copies of the days absences (1 for each Year Coordinator)
- Student Variations Book
- Excursion Lists
- Medical Register
NOTE: They are also to check sick bay

The School Secretary will keep an Evacuation Folder with the following information.
- Student Information Folder
- Tutor Group Lists

School receptionist to take Staff Variations Book


Each Year Coordinator will get their respective Tutor Group Lists and hand them out
to their staff.
Each Coordinator will also have a copy of the days absences.
NOTE: These rolls are to be returned to the Coordinator ASAP.
Assistant Principals to ensure orderly conduct onto buses.
The Maitland City Evacuation Procedures take effect.
Proposed Assembly Area is Maitland TAFE at Metford.
The Critical Incident Plan may then need to come into effect
