Summary
In Japans Toyama Bay, northwest of Tokyo, there has been a rare sighting of an animal
whos only ever been photographed three times in the wild. This rare and majestic animal, is the
Architeuthis or Giant Squid, which still remains to be a mystery to most scientists, despite being
the largest invertebrate on the Earth. This particular animal was twelve feet long, but they can
grow up to 40 feet in length and weigh nearly a ton. This amazing creature would have scared
mass crowds away, yet some people like driver Akinobu Kimura jumped right into the water to
swim with this creature. He said My curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the
water and go close to it this squid can get bigger than a bus and causes everyone to ask
questions about this beast. With its inhospitable deep-sea habitat it has made them uniquely
difficult to study and most of what the world knows about them has been from carcasses that
washed up on beaches or hauled in by fisherman; this proves how rare of a feet, getting up
close and personal with it is. This sighting has a great impact on all studies especially ones of
environmental science.
Opinion of article
I found this article to be amazing and super informative. I really enjoyed learning about
one of the rarest organisms the ocean has to offer. I learned about how rare this organism was
and it gave me a vivid close up, in the life of this majestic animal. The article and the video that
went along with it, had amazing visuals and presented the information in an eye catching way. I
really enjoyed this article and found it worked perfectly with my AP environmental studies
because it helped me learn about a new and exquisite creature, similarly to the endangered
species project we completed.
So what?
Some people might be thinking, what is so important about a giant squid, does that just
mean giant calamari? No, the spotting this this squid and more organisms like this, can lead to
many great feets in medicine and other technological advances. If we start studying these
animals in their habits, we can learn all about their different techniques for collecting foods or
hiding from predators. These techniques might useful to us in our everyday lives.
