Social Change: Social Movements

Group Project Overview

What?
Students will be completing a group (in class) multi-media presentation
discussing the social movement of their choice. (Topic selection is subject to
final approval by Dr. Elvin.) Each group will study of a selected Social
Movement as a sociologist and create a multi-media presentation to present
in class. What does that mean exactly? It means that using creativity, you
are to discuss the history and stages of growth of the movement using the 5
stage model (see attached chart) including the groups ideology, membership
and leadership as well as whether it has (or is) producing the desired social
change.
How?
Choose a social movement. Remember this is a project about the movement
of the group - not the just the topic. You are to examine the history of the
movement, what created/caused it, who led it, who belonged to it, what was
its ideology, what did it accomplish, and is it still around (and if not, why
not?).
Students are expected to use scholarly sources (journal articles, books, and
government data). Your group will need to compile a reference list for your
resources in APA 6th edition format to submit as a portion of your grade. Do
not just GOOGLE your movement. (5 sources minimum, 3 of the 5 must be
scholarly)
Evaluation:
Please see the rubrics for details as to the grading of this project. There are
five factors that will impact your grade (Participation, Presentation, Content,
Creativity and your Reference list). Please ensure that the workload is
evenly spread out or it will impact your grade.
For the presentation each member of the group must take part. Each group is
expected to develop a creative, interesting multi-media presentation (this
can include costumes, video, posters, skits, PPT, very brief film clips, etc.).
This project will require out of class time to complete. Please prepare
accordingly and do not wait until the last minute!

Each group will submit a copy of their reference list to Dr. Elvin the day of
their presentation.
