Sound Journal
When choosing who had to do sound, as there were only two of us in our
production team, Kiren and I had decided on dividing the role between us.
This enabled both of us to gain the experience and use the creativity and
the talents we already had to then explore and see what we could do.
The role of what the person in charge of sound does is ensuring that the
audience is able to gain the cinematic experience by what they can hear
from watching the production. In the short film, it was vital that non
diegetic and diegetic sounds were put in place appropriately. As we had
used voiceover, and background music, as well as changing the levels or
the conversation when filming, we had to make sure that they were put in
appropriate places and that the sound effects were used well.
For the voiceover, we had asked both actors, Michael and Odain to record
something we needed. The voiceover consisted of a missed call and
Michael leaving a message on Odain voicemail. We had done this by
asking them to come into the studio we had booked out for a hour, to
record there. This was so that there was no excess background noise that
could disrupt it, and to ensure that it sounded professional and well
completed. We had given them a transcript of what they had to say, which
was what they had read off from. The benefit from this, was that we did
not need to re-record anything again as it was completed well.
During the editing process and making sure sound was well levelled, Kiren
and I had sat down and looked at the flaws to ensure that we could
change them and turn them faultless. There were only a few issues, as we
had to keep levelling them to make sure the sound was on point; however
this was the best strategy as we could ensure that we had progressed
from the beginning.
When choosing the background noise and extra sound effects, we had to
make sure which were the most convenient to use, as we didnt want to
choose anything that was not needed or anything that didnt suit it. We
had chosen a background track to the beginning and a different one after.
This was able to give it a different approach as there was a nice contrast
in it. The sound effects that we had used were the gun shot noise, and the
mask over the cry after the death. The sound effects and background
noises were well chosen and i think that we had performed at our best as
it was very suitable.
